Just made a seven hour drive and had too much time for thinking.
We all know the .375 H&H has been around for a hundred years and ammo is made buy multiple companies. The .375 (or .416) Ruger is only made by Hornady, if they go out of business or those calibers go the way of the Dodo bird what would you do with your African/Alaskan?
While I doubt anyone has actually changed calibers would it be feasible to rebarrel to .300WM, .338WM, .458WM or one of the Taylor cartridges?
OK, I'm going to sleep now...

I usually don't concern too much about if a particular cartridge will be discontinued or not because in the last several years I've only been picking up rifles not only for their current chambering but for the ease of making it something else. Rodney.

RIP, Driving rain, heavy fog, temps right around freezing and at one point a vehicle upside down and sideways blocking traffic made "driving faster" less possible than normal.
What can I say, I'd made a trip to Cabela's the previous day and thinking ensued.

5MM Rem is still killing turkeys deader than dirt, down in Texas, and its been gone for a while.
I agree. I have 8mm Remington Mag and 350 Rem Mag and enough brass to keep me going till the barrels are shot out. Reloading means never having to say you're sorry.

Yeah, I know; great price too. Picked a bad example for my illustration, but 5 years ago you could buy the rifles cheaper than the bullets. I was finding them for $60!!!!!!!!!!!

If things get that bad that Hornady and Ruger go out of business......we are all screwed. They are two of the companies that are doing the most to keep our pastime going. I support both, and in doing that won't have to worry about their business model.

I didn't mean for everyone to get hungup on the demise of the company or cartridge. I was more curious as to if the African/Alaskan rifle was suitable to rebarrel to one of the standard length belted magnums.

I knew what you were asking. I don't personally know. It is easy to open bolt faces and shorten extractors. It is not practical if the donor's bolt face is larger than the new cartridge head. Also action length comes into play. An H&H class cartridge takes a very long action. Another issue is feedrail width. Many of these shorter fat beltless magnums are pretty wide. Good topic for discussing. Thanks for bringing it up.

I agree. The 375Ruger case will not disappear from both commercial and custom production anytime soon. I can still buy brass for cartridges that went obsolete in the early 1900's. I'd rest easy. Cheers... Con

Thank the internet for that one! There is a big resurgence of obsolete cartridges and a very quick proliferation of wild cats. All this shared info, plus brass makers who specialize in odd stuff are now out and available for anyone with a PC. Heck, don't even need that anymore, half the time I post on here via my cell phone!
If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

I got one in nearly perfect shape for 50$.....
I still shoot my 30 Remington, 25-36 Marlin, and even the old 32 Win SL, but the tough one is the 35 S&W
