I'm looking for a load that will get the 300gr hollow points above 2600 fps. It will not be a hunting load for obvious reasons, but I want to see the damage a 458 lott varmint bullet will do to jugs of water or coyote. I have Hodgdon Varget and IMR 4198 on hand as possible powders to use.

I'm also interested in a load like this, particularly using the Hornady FTX or Barnes tipped TSX at velocities greater than 2600fps. Haven't found anything yet, but from what reading I have done, I think it will take Reloader 7 or H322. The only thing I can think of is to start with a max 45-70 loads in the 458 win mag case and work up from there. Then once you've hit max in the win mag load from there in the Lott case. The tricky part is that it is unlikely that a powder suitable for the 45-70 will also be suitable for the Lott. Also, with as soft and lightly constructed as the JHP, FTX, and TTSX are, you can probably stop around 2300fps as neither you nor the coyote nor even a deer will be able to tell the difference. ...on earth as it is in Texas

My 458 Lott loading is all dated to several years ago, and there are better powders now than when I was loading heavy loads for the lott. However, last year I needed a load to do some high velocity test work in the 458 Lott and I used H-322 to do this with. I was testing a 325 gr North Fork Cup Point and used 88 gr of H-322 for 2842 fps. I am not saying this is safe, good, or anything about it, just that I used it for this terminal test and it gave me no issues or problems, might look at H-322 for this sort of work. I always used RL 7 and IMR 4198 for the lighter loads, not sure it's so good for high velocity light bullet loads? A 300 grain bullet out of a Lott would be alot of fun for yotes! I never went down that road, I have loaded a lot of 350 grain Speer and hornady bullets to 2700+ fps using Ramshot Tac. Great powder for that application, and very accurate in my Ruger 77.

So The powders I have aren't ideal for the light bullet loads but I did find a load in the Speer manual of 71gr IMR4198 behind 350 gr bullet for the 458 win mag. So I put 72 and 73 grains. I figured this would be safe because I'm using a lighter bullet in a larger case. I think it will get me in the ball park. So, there's a lot of powders to choose for the 458 lott & win mag. H322 seems to be the powder a few have listed so far. Is H322 the best powder for a variety of loads in the Lott. I've also seen H335, H4895, and IMR3031 listed in a variety of bullet weights with respectable velocity.

80gr IMR4198 propelled a 350grain Barnes X at 2677avg fps and 81gr went 2724fps, both with CCI250s, BeLL brass loaded to 3.500" in my 24" barreled Lott.

Check out Hogdon's Reloading Data Web Site: http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp They've got two loads listed that go 2750+

Well, 72 gr IMR4198 got me 2672 fps with 300 gr Rem HP. 73 gr IMR4198 got me 2730 fps with 300 gr Rem HP. both loads were pretty accurate. They are definitely grenades at these velocities. I've shot 1 gallon water jugs with a 223, 270, 30-06, 300 win, 338 win, 375 h&h, 416 rigby, 45-70, and more. I have never seen a jug of water explode even close to what it did today with these 458 lott varmint loads. It didn't just explode it. It vaporized it!!!! Probably 50 separate little plastic pieces lay in a 30 ft radious of ground zero.
