First off I would like to thank you guys for being so quick to answer my question about A-square. His situation really is sad and I hope that he can get it together soon so that he can go back to doing what he loves!!! Anyways I have a question that I'm sure one of you could answer. I'm a rabid Ruger#1 fan and own a couple of these fine rifles in .375 H&H and the other in .416 Rigby. What I was wondering was if someone could recomend a smith that could redo one to .470 Capstick?? and about how much it would cost. Also if I decide to go the bolt action way, what would be the best and lowest cost gun to look for, for the conversion. I'm assuming some sort of .375 seeing as that is what the .470 is based on. Thanks. ------------------

Do it up right, forget the 470 capstick and go 470 Nitro Express. I can understand a 470 cap in a boltgun, but in a falling block single shot, you really should go with the NE. Anyhow, I know Bowen Arms and SSK do the jobs, and assume that Carolina Precision would as well. PS, just had a synapse fire, I believe Pac Nor will also do the barrel job, but don't believe they will do a matching taper to the factory tube, nor fit 1/4 ribs. If you are considering a re-bore and chamber of a 458 tropical, I'd think again, the holes for the 1/4 rib are drilled very deeply, and even if a shop recomended that route, I'd re-consider. I don't see any reason why a shop couldn't turn the barrel the same contour as the factory barrel and re-fit the 1/4 rib. Oh, cost, Depending on what you have done in regards to the sights and/or the quarter rib, I'd say you'd be looking at $500-1000. One other thing to consider, if you are going bigger then a 416, you might want to consider going all the way to 50 caliber, the component bullets are becoming fairly available, and you can load it down to a 500 Linebaugh revolver, mid power would be on par with the 50 Alaskan, and you can load it up to the DANG! levels of power. Ron has a 510 JAB on a ruger #1, I suppose the most practicle route (460 weatherby necked up), but personally, I'd go with a 500 NE. There is also the 50-110 if cowboy rounds turn your crank. [QUOTE]Originally posted by JR: JR in a bolt action try looking at the CZ550 in a .458 rather than in the .375. I think you will find that the feed ramp will be better for you and require no work. The Bruo 602 in .375 that I had, had a narrow feed ramp compared to the .458 which was just about flat across the top. I don't know if they have changed this with the CZ550 action but it would be something to look for since the .475 round nose bullets will feed better off this ramp. 470 Mbogo

A friend of mine had SSK do a No.1 over in 500 Nitro Express 3.25". It turned out great, but it did need a new barrel. Reboring was out of the question as the previously mentioned rib holes preclude that option. I do not know if that would be a problem only going up to .475" or not, but a quick e-mail to SSK will answer that question pretty darned quickly.
