I can't remember which site I saw this on recently, but the discussion was that Hornady was possibly going to be bring out 450/400 components (411) and someone mentioned possibly rechambering their Ruger #1 or #3,I don't recall from 405 to 450/400.It took me about a day to dawn on the idea of the possibilty of doing this in one of the new Win. 95's.Any ideas on whether that action can handle the pressure? This is'nt the first abstract + possibly stupid idea I've had,but it did seem interesting to consider.Just out of sheer curiosity I'm wondering if this is at all feasible.Any ideas?

The Ruger No.1 can withstand about any pressure and case diameter of any modern cartridge up to a .600 N.E. according to some gunsmiths like JRS.

The 1895 Winchester is too short (at least the magazine) for the .450/.400 3". I have a 1895 in .405 Winchester that shoots Woodleigh 400 grain solids and softs in .411 diameter once I lengthened the throat. Problem is that the magazine on the forward end slants slightly backwards so that more than three down will "stick" the follower because the loaded cartridge is too long (fif that makes any sense?). If anyone knows how to lengthen the magazine, let me know!

In any event, I've gotten over 2000 fps with the 400 grain Woodleighs with no pressure problems.

I agree to the strength of the #1.I was planning on building up Seyfreid's 30/416 Ackley Imp. on my 416 #1 a couple of years ago,but put it on the back burner mostly due to the cost of the case form dies.Maybe later. But I would'nt have any qualms using that action. As far as the 95 conv. goes I was mostly just curious.Thats how most of my expensive projects start.Anyway I think the money would be better spent going toward another dbl.Just an idea.

Norman,

There already is a conversion for the M95 like that: the 411 Hawk, or the 400 Whelen improved.

The ballistics are identical to the 450/400: 400 grain bullet at 2100 fps, 350 grain at 2350 fps, 300 grain at 2500 fps.

Both the 411 Hawk and 400 Whelen Improved use .411 bullets. Most 450/400 rifles use .408 bullets, but a few use .410 to .412.

Barrels are readily available.

The 450/400 won't fit in the 1895 mag box and a conversion would be a nightmare. The best alternative is the .411 hawk or .400 Brown whelen on the 30-06 case. You may be able to get equivalent velocities (2150fps or more) out of a 400 gr bullet. No one has reported success yet though. -Rob

I've got a 411 Hawk in a 95 Winchester. I've reported here and elsewhere of getting just over 2000 fps with 400 grain bullets. I'm a chicken reloader and have too much invested in my rifle to try and push things. My rifle has a 22" barrel, so I'm sure 2100 fps with a 24" barrel is possible. How much more than that is up to someone much braver (or more experienced) than I. I think you will run out of magazine length before you hit pressure problems though. Like Judge G, I still have issues in getting top performance from the 95 because of the magazine slant.

.411" bullets are not the most available. Hornady, Barnes, North Fork, Hawk and Woodleigh (I believe) make 300 grain bullets.

Swift makes a run of 350 grain bullets every once in a while. Hawk has a steady supply of 350's. North Fork makes a 360 grain.

Woodleigh and Hawk are the only companies making anything heavier. Hawk will make just about anything you want, but they seem kind of soft to me.
