I took my new(to me, anyway) project rifle to the range today for the first time. It is a 404 Jeffery built on a Whitworth action, that I am in the process of finishing(sights, etc.). I don't know who did the initial work on it, but I couldn't pass up the chance to finish what they had started. I put a Leupold 1.5X5 on it to see if it was accurate enough to be worth the expense of NECG open sights, and a full action job. To say the least, I was extremely happy with the only two loads that I tried. Due to heavy rains recently and standing water on the range I was limited to a little over 35 yards, but now I can't wait until I can try it at longer distances.

I also shot my original Jeffery in 375 H&H after a thorough cleaning with Wipeout bore foam, as it has been a bit better than average performer the couple of times that I have fired it, but always seemed to want to shoot better. It has an aperture rear sight with a large opening for fast target acquisition and low light shooting, but not conducive to precision shooting. I decided to try with a 300 grain Swift A-Frame load, which I had not used in it before, and the results were great with this load as well.

All in all, it was a most productive day at the range [Big Grin] [Big Grin] .

3 shots with 76 grains of RL15 and Woodleigh 400 grain SP at a 1" orange paster (I think it likes this load [Wink] )

Very interesting. What was done to the Whitworth? Just a new barrel? Any pics of the Jefferey?

Thanks guys.

Mickey1,
The Whitworth was barreled, custom stocked, and the mag box, follower, and rails were modified (it still needs some work in this department to feed and eject properly with three in the mag rather than two).

In response to your request I will add a photo of my Jeffery 333(upper) and 375(lower). The 333 was built in 1908 (first year of production for this caliber), and the 375 in 1952, according to factory records. I will even throw in a photo of another classic rifle, A Westley Richards double in 450/400 3". I guess you can tell that I like the old British rifles and calibers [Wink] .

diesel_dude,

Hang in there, it took me quite a few years to work my way to here (plus getting some good deals along the way [Smile] ). If you are interested in a few other photos, I will try to post a link to my album on Imagestation.
