Hi, I'm looking to have a LH Stainless Model 70 Classic rebarreled from 416 REM to 375 H&H for my oldest son. I've got a great gunsmith, just wondering who would make a quality stainless barrel that would match or be close to the contour of the barrel that's on it. Thanks!

Regards,

Chuck

chuck375,
Just get a No. 5 sporter (Pac-Nor, Douglas, McGowen contours are all very close) and you will be very close to the factory contour.
Your gunsmith can work with that most versatilely.
IIRC, the standard Winchester contour is just a hair bigger than a No. 5 sporter standard contour.
Use a No. 5 if you want close to factory,
with no special turn-down needed, just has to be cut on muzzle and breech to make the shank/knoxform match closely, if that is important,
but the glass bedding job to fill in the barrel channel will allow easy use of either No. 4 or No. 5 sporter contours.
I would prefer a No. 4 for a medium weight synthetic stock, No. 5 for a heavy walnut stock.
I go as light as a No. 3 for use with a 1-pound synthetic stock on a .375 H&H.

Krieger will match your factory barrel contour for an extra charge. Excellent barrels but often a longer lead time than some.

Thanks Rip and BigB, I'm going to try and make it out to Kevin Weaver's (my gunsmith) place this weekend ...

Be careful if you use Krieger. They say they will match a contour but they have minimums they will not go below. I had them re-barrel a stainless M 70 375 H&H and the Krieger barrel has a considerably larger contour than the factory barrel. Their minimum contour on a stainless barrel is larger than there minimum contour on a chrome moly barrel.

Chuck,

If you don't mind putting a blued barrel on that gun, I have a Winchester OEM .375H&H barrel from a LH M-70 I would trade you for that .416 barrel.

Barring that, I'd buy the .416 barrel from you.

Hi George, my son wants stainless, even though we're going to get all the metal CeraKoted so that's what I'm going to do. I'll send you the 416 barrel at no charge if you pay for the shipping. Thanks for all of the things you and Saeed do for us keeping this board up, running and moderated.

Chuck

Lawton will do it for no charge on a M70.
