Whats some good QR mounts for a 458Lott? I already have a base, and hopefully next month I'm gonna have the scope.

I use the Talley's with a Leupold M8 2.5x Compact Heavy Duplex. No slippage and return to zero is fine. The bases loosen after a few shots even with Locktite. Mike375 has a method of keeping them tight that I haven't tried. I think I'll have my base screws changed to the 8x40 then try Mike's method if that doesn't work.

For those who experience slippage, consider the following:

1. Use a scope with a matte finish. The rougher finish lets the rings grip better.

2. Get recent vintage rings with those little grooves that grip the scope.

3. Put some powdered rosin in the rings to bear against the scope if you have to.

4. If rosin does not work, epoxy the scope in the rings. If the scope keeps slipping it will be destroyed anyway, so just wed the scope and rings together for life.

Pete E,

These were Mike's comments from another thread about the bases.

Glue the mounts on with a softer curing expoxy and also the screws. A warm will let them go. There isa chemical we can ge in Australai called Episolve that cuts stright through soft cure epoxy. I think it is based on some chemical called tricloroetane or similar name. They won't come loose if glued on.

By soft expozy, I mean a glue as distinct fro the rock hard setting epoxies we use for bedding.

Once the bases are screwed and glue the standard screws are fine. In short, whether it is the size 6 or size 8 screw, you really need to glue.

The best way of all of course is to have the bases soldered and screwed but that get out of the home handyman area.

A surefire way to put the bases on is to glue and screw and then fire the rifle a few times before the glue has cured, removing the rings and tighteneing after each shot. Then put the rifle away and don't shoot again until the glue has cured.

Mike

Longbob,

Thanks, I think I recall the original thread now. If I remember correctly somebody (maybe Mike?) recommended the epoxy used to heads on the shafts of golf clubs. I asked a couple of keen golfers in the office, and the had never heard of the stuff, go figure..

Joel,

What type of scope are you getting? If you're planning on the Leupold M8 2.5X, I'd recomend getting it from Premier Reticles, and having them fit the 4a reticle, and click turrets.

If I get over this cold, I'll be hunting Fri, but if not, I should be at the range.
