David A WhippleLooking for .500 Jeffery Dies
Guys,
Picked up a new CZ in .500 Jeffery and I need a set of dies.
Anyone have any they would like to part with, or know a place that may have some?
Thanks.

CHIPBHello David A Whipple. RCBS lists part number 24704 in their special order section for $264.45. Probably not in their inventory. Cheers. Chip.

jeffeossoDavid,
you need to make certain that the dies match your chamber reamer -- there's at least 3 different shoulder angles on the 500 jeffe being made

That is a very good point.
Surely CZ is using the current CIP specs, since they started making those some years after the CIP spec was revised in 2002.
Dies should be CIP spec.
The shoulder angle for that brass is one-half of the brass junction cone angle of 25*13'41", i.e.,
shoulder angle = 12.615 degrees, by CIP brass spec.
CIP chamber junction cone angle is 24*56'56".
The hemi-angle of the shoulder in the chamber is 12.475 degrees.
Back to brass specs for shoulder hemi-angles:
1. Kynoch of 1928 for .500 Jeffery: 12.63 degrees
2. RWS of 1940 for 12.7x70mm Schuler: 23.54 degrees
3. Romey Hybrid of 1997 for ".500 Jeffery": 19.97 degrees.
There are others also. In 2003 I printed and filed two JGS reamer prints. The chamber shoulder hemi-angles on those were 20 degrees and 37 degrees!
The CIP revision of 2002 seems to be a return to the Kynoch 1928 standard.
Brass sized with dies made to that .500 Jeffery standard will chamber in Schuler and Romey rifles,
but not vice versa if tolerances and headspace are good.
There is now only one standard for the .500 Jeffery: CIP of 2002
I would be leary of the "Hollywood" dies being to CIP spec, but they might well be, close enough, like 1928 Kynoch.
If I could get them for about a hundred bucks I would buy them and try them.
They could be good for other things, like partial neck sizing and crimping .500 Mbogo, etc.
About 2003 I was knocking around a gunshop on Turbine Drive in Rapid City, SD. Out of business now, IIRC.
Lo and behold, they had a set of .500 Jeffery dies (which I did not need) and some brass and bullets of the 404 Jeffery persuasion which I could use.
The .500 Jeffery dies were made by a "North Devon" firm in the U.K., good quality.
I got lucky. They are 1928 Kynoch spec for .500 Jeffery.
I am still waiting for a CIP spec chamber reamer to be delivered, so I can have built "A Gun for Dinosaur."
Only 15 years since I got the dies for it.

chuck375My CZ in 500 Jeffery wouldn't chamber Kynoch factory ammo I was puzzled since I bought a 5 pack for almost a hundred dollars. Since I strictly reload for it, it doesn't really matter, but I still wonder ....

Odd, 1928 Kynoch ammo is supposed to fit more chambers than any other.
I wonder if Kynoch had switched to making it to Romey spec before the CIP revision of 2002?
The last CIP revision before that was in 1999,
and that came after the "Romey Hybrid" of 1997,
for whatever reason.
They had to change it to very close match to 1928 Kynoch in 2002, for whatever reason.
And who knows what it was prior to CIP 1999?
The brass and die combo that works in Chuck375's or sumbuddy else who know CZ-chambered .500 Jeffery rifle should be interesting to David Whipple.

chuck375RCBS dies work just fine in my CZ 550. Only ones I've tried so can't say anything about the others.

chuck375I use Jamison brass, $4 per case. I have a hundred or so, get 10 reloads per case, still have plenty left lol

cnm123I haved used both Jamison and Norma brass and the rim on the Norma brass feeds and ejects more reliably

chuck375Good to know, but that being said I've had zero issues feeding and extracting Jamison brass. Don't doubt Norma is a little better.
