What bases and rings do you prefer on your heavy kicking bolt rifles? And does your choice let you remove and remount the scope without losing zero?

tally mounts are excellent, I also really like the leupold QRW's and QR's all work well and are very repeatable. LostHorizonsOutfitters.com ---------------------------- "You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas" Davy Crockett 1835 ----------------------------

talley - look good and more than strong enough.

ErikD-- My Sako and Optilock rings/bases do both those things....just not easy to mount on other rifles.

I like the Talleys, but also have had a set of QR Leupolds on a .375 for years with no problem. A shot not taken is always a miss

I like the Leupold QRW rings and bases on my 416 Rem. Very good return to zero, and lots of bearing surface to withstand recoil. Don_G ...from Texas, by way of Mason, Ohio and Aurora, Colorado!

Leupold QRW's are my top choice. Second would be Talley. Leupold QR's third. All of these, of course for rifles without integral bases. I am always happy to stick with Ruger rings or original CZ rings on those rifles with integral bases. I hate Sako rings and dovetails, and abhorred the Optilocks so much that I traded off the rifle to be rid of them. I like Badger rings with a picatinny rail for that rare 34 mm scope-tubed behemoth. Original German Claw Mounts are quite good, but I only own one rifle with those, and I'll be dipped if I am going to want those on another rifle when Leupold QRW's are available. Just beware of the ancient first production Leupold QRW's that had a round crossbolt on the bottom of the ring that mated with a square cross-slot in the base. That was an IQ Test Failure, which Leupold soon corrected. For strength, Leupold QRW's are as good as it gets now. In fact, the Leupold QRW's are best by far: lower profile, sleeker rifle when the scope is removed and iron sights used. The Leupold QRW soap box deserves some use now and then. I am stepping down now.

RIP, I had forgotten the ones with the round crossbar. (CRS) Everyone needs to make sure they don't get those (on a used rifle or from a dusty bin) - they'll hammer the slots out under recoil. Don_G ...from Texas, by way of Mason, Ohio and Aurora, Colorado!

I am very happy with my talley mounts in my 404J, 8X68S and 338 WM. I also own a Warne scope mounts in my .375 and worked very good on it. In my double 9.3X74 R the claw mounts works fine. I have had many troubles with my EAW detachable mounts in the .375 H&H. So I concludeb this type of mounts don't work on heavy rifles. Ignacio Colomer

Ignacio ( hey, that's my middle name! I agree with you on the EAWs. I have a set on my 375 H&H and they've held up so far, but I've had to adjust the locking mechanism on teo occassions and that is two too many. They are much easier to detach than the others though. jorge USN (ret) DRSS Verney-Carron 450NE Cogswell & Harrison 375 Fl NE Sabatti Big Five 375 FL Magnum NE DSC Life Member NRA Life Member
