What would a comercial action and a Barreled reciever in 505 gibbs cost....Not a P-14 action, but one of the new large commercial actions. Please if anyone could give me a rough guess.

Thanks,
urdubob

Buy a CZ in 416 Rigby or a Ruger in 416 Rigby caliber and rebarrel it, scrub off the billboard on the side of the action and barrel with a CZ, clean it up and restock it, add a detachable muzzle break, with a thread protector additional that looks like the barrel. Your looking at $1500 to $2500 not counting labor, depending on quality of wood...I'd buy a nice piece of Turkish in a low grade but with lots of color on one side and nothing on the other, it would be cheap, then have it laminated by someone with the pretty slabs on the outside...Figure an additional $1600 labor for the stock, plus trimmings like recoil pad, swivels, Rings and bases, iron sights would add another $500, unless you want a quarter rib and that alone will run about $700 average...

Keep in mind, use only a smith that specializes in big bore rifles...not some guy that the first thing he sez is "properly inletted, and 505 won't crack the stock", that is your first clue to run. You want perfect inletting, then relieved and steel bedded action and all recoil lugs, be sure another lug is on the barrel 5";s in front of the action lug and glassed in the rear of the lug..Two or three crossbolts and a hidden threaded steel bolt glassed through the grip from the tang to the grip cap...fitted scope bases with 8-40 screws and solder is good also...

A good big bore ain't a cheap proposition...but you can cut a lot of costs by going with a 416 Rem, 404 or 458 Lott...

How does this sound? Just the action.

"Olympic Arms Ultra Mag action. L. O. Bauska tapered octagon, chrome-lined barrel in .505 Gibbs. Express sights, model 70-type safety, long claw extractor. This barrel is a work of art, with 1/4 rib, sling underlug, and front sight ramp machined from original steel. Will sacrifice at $1,950"

Thanks,

Urdubob,

That sounds like a deal for someone. I'm just wondering where the chrome-lined bore comes in -- is it some kind of surplus military barrel, I wonder?

I also mentioned on another post, there was recently a 35 cal Douglas barrel that had been octagonal-ized, with quarter rib, sling stud, and front sight ramp [all integral], on E-bay. Starting bid around $350, no takers the last time I checked.

Be very careful of proper feeding in a 505 Gibbs. This is a Big cartridge at 3.840 OAL and unless the mag box was specifically designed for the 505 Gibb expect big problems with feeding. If I were to use a cZ550 I'd definately go with a Schuler style single stack mag ala Fritz 454. I used a vektor action and integrally machined barrel by Searcy for mine. The stock alone had 100 hrs of work in it. I posted pictures a few months ago on this forum. It was not a simple matter to get reliable feeding with this cartridge and I had to play with it for quite awhile. I put about $3500 into my barreled action alone and $400 in the stock. I did all the stockwork and action work myself.
While an enfield can also be used,I really think there are much better options. The granite Mountain action is really nice and I'm actually building a 600 OVERKILL on one as we speak.-Rob

My 505 is built on a BRNO 602 action. Jim Wisner made the box and handled the action work. It has a staggered magazine and holds 3 rounds in the box. It feeds flawlessly.
