I was thinking about loading a CZ 550 in.416 Rigby down to around 1700 to 1800 fps with a 335 gn cast lead bullet and letting my wife shoot it off a standing rest, like a set of shooting sticks but more stable. Part of the reason for the shooting sticks is with the longer (to long) LOP it will be to muzzle heavy for her to hold comfortably.

Then work slowly work up in recoil a little to let her see if she is comfortable with a bit of recoil.
If she feels comfortable with that, we will get a different stock and shorten the LOP to fit her and then up the recoil level a little more.

The question I have is, since the LOP will be to long for her
will it accentuate the recoil even though it is on a set of shooting sticks and will have open sights.

Or should she not shoot at all till it has a stock with the correct LOP?
I am trying to avoid buying an extra stock and having it shortened then she shoots it once or twice and says nah, don't want that much recoil and we go with a smaller cartridge for her.

She is interested in possibly having a 10.75x68 built. We just want to bring the recoil level up to the the level of a 10.75x68 with a 350gn bullet @ 2300 fps or a 400gn @ 2150 fps.

Would it be a bad idea because the LOP will be to long for her

It's a Mauser thing, you wouldn't understand.

While it might be unwieldy, a long LOP should not accentuate recoil, but if her finger cannot reach the trigger correctly, she may hurt her fingers under recoil.

Does she shoot other, smaller guns well? In other words, is she a stranger to recoil?

George
P.S. Was it really her idea to get a 10.75x68, or yours? Wink

I have this problem as most factory stocked rifles are a bit long for me. I think she will be fine in the beginning but once the recoil gets more stout, long LOP dose increase the felt recoil. I have experience the effect from a 300 Win. Mag. to a 416 Rem. Mag.

Allen, I know he is a far piece off from you, but Tip Burns ( www.burnsgunrepair.com ) has a 10.75x68 reamer, and I know he has a couple of Mark X (Charles Daly) actions that would make a neat trim rig!

I was drooling at some rounds over there the other day. Might have to make me one in time Big Grin

...... Give it a try ... I loaded 300 gr X bullets @ 2500 fps for my wife to shoot in my 458 win mag .. It has a 13" lop already so that was fine alreadt . with the muzzle brake and a decelerator pad she did fine .and wasn,t overly bothered by the recoil ..in fact she shot a couple few 400 gr bullets @ 2380 fps from it and said it kicked pretty hard .which @ about 8.5 lbs it does a little .. The load you quoted is very mild and should be great fun for her ..

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Very often with women, the curve of the pistol-grip is a bigger problem than the lop. With a comfortable grip, finger will not reach the trigger, even if the LOP is measured to be perfect. To find recoil level with an uncomfortable stock, a standing rest would be to prefer.
