Everyone knocks the Ruger 375 and 416 because you won't be able to find ammo for it in Africa should your ammo be lost in transit.

My question is--outside the 375 H&H and 458 win mag, how likely is one to find ammo for their big bore rifle?

I have a hard time believing that any NE caliber, any 416 or 458 Lott ammo will be in most camps or local gun stores. Perhaps I'm wrong.

I would also think that with the 375 Ruger having been around for 2 years now, plenty of hunters using it have "forgotten" their ammo when they left.

I used a .318 W.R. and a 450/400 3" on my safari and did not worry about ammo. I divided it between my wifes luggage and mine. This is one of the highly overrated fears pushed here. If everyone worried about it, almost no double rifles would ever get to Africa!

PHs tout some of the stores in Joberg. Ask for a www.listing and check their inventory. I doubt you will ever see the head stamp Ruger there.

My ammo did not make the plane from Amsterdam to Jo'berg with me in late May. The gunshop in Phalabrowha had .308, .30-06, 9,3x62, and .375 H&H visible on the shelf. (One of my rifles was a 9,3x62). I was told that .458 Win Mag was a day away if it was needed.

I hunted the next day with locally purchased ammo, and mine was delivered late that afternoon. Surprised me that it got there at all!

416 Rem ammo should not be hard to find in Zim. I would think that most out fits have a PH or two who use one. The 416 Rigby should not be much harder to find.

Lott ammo would be harder, but it is a non issue as you can use 458 win mag if needed.

You are correct about ammo being left behind. With things so tight in Zim it was not uncommon for PHs to accept left-over ammo even if they did not have a rifle for it because they usually knew some other PH who could use it.

I don't think the same could be said for the Ruger. I just don't believe too many hunters have been using it over there.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Some would like us to believe that it will be common one day. I will believe it when I see it. Ruger really screwed up on this one.
