Cooper of Montana has a new model 58 dual lug rifle, that comes with sights and a dropped box magazine for about $3000-6000 depending on options.

Missing a couple of features I was looking for (integral scope mounts) beyond that it looks pretty slick for the money.

They are making them in 375, 416 Rem, 416 Rigby, 458 Lott and 500 Jefferys.

Buying and settling for a Ruger is like buying a Dodge

Stainless Rugers are even better a good hard working get it done doesn't need a lot of expensive work done do it.

I see why smiths do not like them they can't charge for all the fixing a 98 needs.

Jim,

Well NO! I drive a F-150, but it is 6 years old and the next truck will be a Dodge 3500. Dodge is doing things with power, fuel economy and strength that are finally getting American trucks moving in the right direction.

I agree on the Ruger 77 though. My apologies to the ghosts of Leonard Brownell and Bill Ruger, the 77 for me isn't my first choice. Ruger's execution of the mauser action is just a little weird.

If I could find a 9.3x62 Ruger 77 or a 7x57 with sights in the current Mark II, I'd own it and put a McMillan Sako 75 stock on it and hunt with it as is.

Ruger has integral mounts, and I find that very endearing.

I have seen some amazing Rugers.

The reason why any shooter in the U.S.A., especially one from California would consider a Cooper no matter how nice eludes me. You know the CEO of Cooper donated to the Obama campaign? That would be the same Obama who now wishes to outlaw green tipped 223 Remington ammunition. Also the same Obama one could say is responsible for the now longstanding shortage of reloading components.

Yea, I know, the CEO allegedly stepped down. If you're gullible you can believe that. If you support companies/people that behave like that, don't whine when your rights go down the toilet.

First off, I am not from California. I have lived here less than 6 months. And we are moving after our child is born.

2nd of all, I think it is a nice looking rifle. I know he gave money to obama and I still think he is involved.

3rd off, I don't know of anyplace I said I was ordering one, no integral bases, and the bolt handle is ugly.

From what I have read online, on forums that have stated excatly the same as Grumulkin, is that Cooper was forced out of company, selling it to a another company ( dont remember which ).

Former employees has stated that he was no longer in the company after that ordeal.

I dont see the whole thing as wrong.

Hey, bush started a war that has killed over a million iraqies.. poured trillions into a war fighting sheep herders. Why do you still vote republican?

And people cant get over a CEO of a company supporting the other guy.

There was a post about the Cooper exit shortly after the feces hit the fan. One called the company expressing grief at the unfair treatment of Cooper and was assured that really nothing had changed (i.e., he was still in charge despite the alleged sale).

Years ago, I'm thinking 20 or 30, Ruger had an indiscretion the details of which I don't remember. They've now been on good behavior for long enough I've forgiven them.

Smith and Wesson also kow towed to the government back in the late 1990s or early 2000s. Their top management really left, unlike Cooper. I haven't forgiven them and still avoid their products when practical.

The Cooper incident is much too fresh in my memory to consider excusing it. I'm sure their guns are very nice but you can get just as nice from an a nontraitorous entity.

So, you wont support an American company, making American guns, in America, using American labour?

Because the EX-CEO supported another candidate?

I am sure the 40-50 American employees over at Cooper, appreciates that. Since they had no chance of knowing what their EX-CEO did or did not do, in his spare time.

I have little to add to the discussion other than to mention that the folks at Wilson Barrels (owner Hugo Vivero) are the ones that purchased the Cooper operation. They have been supplying barrels since the start of Cooper. So, it just might be in their best interest as a way to keep Cooper in business. Have been assured several times that Dan is no longer involved in Cooper in any way.

I will one day buy a cooper - they make left handed rifle and people I respect (like the admiral/subsailor74) own and like them.

As for the ceo supporting Obama - I am sorry that is not treasonous activity. It's a damn political choice in a democracy. I think it is a wrong political choice but it's irrelevant to cooper's business.

We start boycotting American business cause of their ceo's personal political choices is simply crazy.

I pay Michael Bloomberg - 2k every month for a Bloomberg terminal - do I support gun control no - I know I fund a little of it. But it's irrelevant - I have a bloomberg terminal for the information its provides to let me make money.

I had one cooper. 338-06, very accurate! awkward to carry for me. Magazine and throat were too short for factory ammo.
