I'm thinking of getting a CZ in 458 Lott, the kevlar stocked one.

Just want to feel the kick and see what all the fuss is about before I take the plunge.

I don't really hunt and mostly shoot mil type rifles, so no use in buying smaller rifles and working my way up IMO. Just want one of the more practical thumpers for my collection.

I don't imagine it being worse than holding pads for or absorbing full power thai style round kicks? Big Grin

Anyone want to help a beginner out? I will provide compensation for your time.

Thanks.

I live in the Arvada/Westminster area and work the weekends. A 10+ hour round trip might not be feasible at this time. Smiler

I have a Ruger N0.1 but have only hand loaded down for it. I honestly do not have all that much interest in shooting full house loads in that gun!
If you do buy one, I would be happy to load up some ammo to whatever you want. I have some options in cast boolits too if you are looking to get some cheap practice in.
I am in Wheat Ridge btw.

your timing is terrible wave.

I have a Winchester M70 in Lott. I live west of Boise, Idaho, but will be traveling thru the Springs in early May.

You could shoot it until your brain tells your right trigger finger to S-T-O-P!!!

CO springs? My buddy/local gunsmith Gary Kimball lives down there. Very doable! (the drive that is).

I'll buy a box of that Hornady DG stuff, will probably give you the rest of the box after touching off one or two rounds.

If you are interested, you can try a couple mags through my rifles and pistols. All in sedate/boring service calibers. Cool

I've actually been lurking this forum off and on for a looooong time. Even bought a CZ 550 action with the .416 rigby bolt face over a decade ago because of this very subforum. Then got hooked on the tactical stuff.

Might just build off of that action. Make it a 416 rigby if the Lott kicks my butt too hard, or maybe 510 wells/500 a-square if it makes me full potato. homer

Just get a CZ in 505 Gibbs and call it done! You won't regret getting it over the 458 Lott. I have both...the Gibbs is the cats ass.

I have a 416 rem mag, definitely a step down in recoil from a Lott, but if you struggle with the 416, you likely need more time before the Lott

If I am taking that great scenery route across I-70 from Utah, how far away are you? Close to Denver?

Idaho,
May I suggest you check the status of the construction along the river in Glenwood Canyon?
I went through there westbound this past August and the four lane went down to two for 8 miles and it was SLOW. Also one way in a few places.
No where near as much "fun" as Red Mountain Pass, but still you want to be alert when you transit that area.

Thanks CR. Perhaps I will just follow my standard route across Wyoming and brave the construction delays that way.

This bunch will want video evidence, so have a friend with a cell phone come along to take pictures... jumping

I put 2 pistols on consignment about 2 weeks ago and they've sold, so I have a bit of funds to acquire my 458 now.

I've read the 450 Ackley thread and got very interested in that chambering and the Winchester bolt rifle.

I'm thinking of getting a Winchester 70 safari in .458 win now, plus the following changes:

McMillan safari stock, maybe this color:

NECG front sight
Sunny Hill drop mag box
Ream to 450 Ackley
Get action slicked up and set up to cycle everything, especially flat nosed

Apologies to Colt Commander for copying his build, I hope my stock color is different enough. Big Grin

The reason I'm deciding on the win 70 is I believe the overall rifle will be smaller/lighter and the bolt throw is a bit shorter.

Will save my CZ magnum action for something truly ridiculous while I train up with this one.

Opinions?

Does AHR do work on win 70?

Decelerator pad vs. limbsaver? Which is better?

Thanks all for helping out!
