MacD37, thanks for the valuable advise. Another question. How does the action bar get bent? I have been told that double will always shoot off the face by salesman.

quote:I think the salesman is telling you the truth, but I suspect he is makeing it sound more ominus than it really is. There are many double rifles that are 50, to 100 yrs old, that have been hunted with since new, that are very serviceable, without any major repairs in their history. The keeping a double tight is a matter of how you care for it. The worst effect on the double is a careless owner. Today, one other thing is people who try to get more speed by handloading. The double rifle is not the place for a hotrod shooter. It simply is designed for a proper load, the it was regulated for. As long as care is taken of the rifle, and the proper loads are used, they will last a lifetime, and with modern steel, a couple of life times! The bending is usually cause by one of these hotrod loaders, pushing the rifle beyond it's design! Reaward thrust of the case pushed by too much chamber pressure is the culprit!

I don't think every double rifle off face has a bent action bar. It may be a case of wear caused by abusive handling in opening and closing and lack of lubrication/cleaning of the bearing surfaces in the lumps and hinge pin, and fasteners getting sloppy too, eh? This could happen even with normal loads. [ 11-17-2002, 02:51: Message edited by: DaggaRon ]
