http://www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/699899 Anyone use these? My 4-bore muzzleloader did some damage to me last weekend. Would this be a decent solution? I want something I can use in the field.

That is the one I use. It works great for me!

You've got my recommendation. I use it all the time with my WinMag. I've also used it with a 458WinMag, 416Rigby and 50-140. It really takes the sting out of the recoil. It won't affect how far you get set back and you'll eventually get bruised up anyway. But then if you wanted a no-pain experience you wouldn't be messing with a 4-bore. Nothing wrong with trying for less pain. Good luck with the shoulders. Hope your retinas and fillings are firmly attached.

I use one, particularly when shooting anything larger than 30-06 at the bench. They work well.

Scot, I've got the Past Magnum shield (not the super mag or whatever) but I did not find it reduced the recoil enough on the bench, this shooting a 8.5lb 375 H&H Sako. I had some plans from an old Shooting Times magazine for a "recoil jig"& got someone to build me one. Now this is good! As you live in the USA I would not bother building one just buy one (I think "gunbrake" or "Lahti" rest - freight to Australia was the killer). Anyway they all work on the same principles - the jig makes the rifle like a 30lb rifle, so the recoil has to move the rifle plus the additional weight. Result: very pleasant recoil. Works great, & the bonus is that whilst not a machine rest it is very stable because of the weight. Mind you I had non-shooting guys build it so initially the screws they used for the L-plate were too thin & the H&H broke off 2 out of the 3 screws. They were beefed up to 3x the size & fine now even with a 375 RUM full power loads. I mean shooting off the bench should be pleasant & I don't care what anyone says about being wimpy. I like Wimpy & painfree. On game I don't have any problems shooting the same heavy kicking rifles. I have also bought one of those Stoney Point Hike n Hunt bipods after using my guide's unit. I will be using it to shoot standing at the range for practice with the heavy kickers, then I may use the Past shield. Regards JohnT
