505 ammo
Still not set up to reload yet anyone know off hand where the “best deal” for 505 ammo might be? Midway has normasolids 11 bucks per. Seen up to $20 per. Figured I’d get loaded ammo and reuse the cases as the want $5 per case it seems. Going to safari shoot so I’d like a small supply. Thanks in advance. This round is definitely a poster child for reloading

I use the RCBS Rockchucker IV for the longer cartridges

Ok thanks. I like the look of the lee turrets one so you can have the does set and swap out the head. Anyhow makinhbsome brass this week...

This is another vote for the big RCBS press for use with the 505 Gibbs. The dies are a larger than normal diameter and need the larger press.

I have loads that are reliable if needed. I found RETUMBO the best performer and RE25 a close second. If you don't like buckets of recoil, steer clear of H4350, the pulse is ridiculous.

Cheers.

I also use the RCBS Rockchucker Supreme. The 1"-12 thread adapter is easy to swap.out for.the 505 dies.
I had an Ammomaster but the stroke made it uncomfortable for me to use due to multiple.shoulder surgeries.
With Woodleigh 600gr RNSN PP, I used 148gr of RETUMBO and averaged 2300fps. A softer load was 145gr for 2150fps. My rifle only weighed 9lbs, recoil was stout.

Cheers.

That’s an understatement but I saw a factory load 600 at 2400. That will hurt. I have been learning that proper form and recoil pad placement is essential for this cartridge! Thanks for the info

Reminds me of a story told to me by Kirk Mason. He was backing a client who had just shot a cow elephant with a big pistol (.454 Casull, I think). A young bull and a cow with calf charged.

The client ran for safety as Kirk waited until almost the last second. At that point, the young bull broke off the charge but the cow kept coming.

He raised his .505 Gibbs (make unknown by me) but instead of the expected big bang, he got a click!

He turned and started to run, the cow hooked a tusk under his cartridge belt and lifted him up in the air. Fortunately, his cartridge belt broke (or came undone) and he fell to the ground.

The cow went down on her knees trying to smash him. He ejected the bad cartridge (a reload) and quickly chambered another. He shot straight up through the chin of the cow and made a perfecc brain shot. The cow died without toppling or crushing Kirk.

A month later (Sep 2003) he was hunting elephants with me.

Good story to learn from. At safari shoot with my 505 I learned a few lessons.
A: don’t bring a open sighted 505 to an accuracy shoot and forget to shoot a stage by BSing with AR members Big Grin

B: as a competitive shooter I religiously chamber check my handguns and Rifles after loading. I failed to do this on my 505 and twice it failed to pick up the top round on intial loading and went click. That will get you killed. From now on I will religiously chambercheck everything especially a DG rifle. Good lesson learned shooting new rifle.
