PSmithWhat the heck is a .423 Dakota?
Hey there Gents,
So what is a .423 Dakota cartridge? I understand it was once a Dakota factory offering, now discontinued.
The current .404 Dakota uses a .423 bullet; is the .423 Dakota the same thing and just a different name or something else entirely?
Thanks,

GeorgeSIt's a rimless design, having a .585″ head and are 2.475″ in length.
The .404 Dakota uses brass with a .545" head,
2.85" 2.57" long.

The 404 Dakota is based on a 404 Jeffery case, the 423 is sometimes referred to an the 423 Dakota-Lapua, based on the use of the Lapua case as its parent, as I understand it.
Paul, I'd buy one of each to make sure you have what you want :-)

Correct except the 404 Dakota is not 2.85" in brass length.
It is also a "short" but just a little over 2.5" long.
The ".423 Dakota-Lapua" (what they called it when Charlie Kokesh was leading them into bankruptcy)
was a joint development of Dakota and Lapua IIRC.
Shorter and fatter than most, just like Charlie Kokesh.

I developed a .423/.338 Lapua Magnum about the same time,
independent of Charlie Kokesh.
Mine had brass of 2.700" length, not 2.4-ish inches.
However, I found it was no improvement over the
standard 404 Jeffery.
So I turned that one into the
"404/.416 Rigby Improved Plus" with 2.9" brass.
I call it the 404 RIP.
It beats the 404 Jeffery by a little,
but it beats the .416 Rigby by a lot!
Dakota M76 African action, McGowen barrel.

Unfortunately the stock is MPI.
