Caliber Chioce for P17 enfield big bore Login/Join

I have a enfield action and am planning on making a big bore out of it. Right now I'm leaning for the 416 Rigby. My gunsmith already has a 416 barrel and reamer. He said it would run about $400 bucks not counting the sights or stock.

The only up side to the 458 win/Lott is cheaper brass and loaded ammo.

Either way I go it will be teflon finished with synthetic stock. Probalby go with NECG sights.

What your guys thoughts on caliber.

Question:
Which caliber for a P17 enfield big bore?

Choices:
416 Rigby
458 Win
458 LOTT

I have 3 Enfields in the works and 2 Rem 30s in 30-06. There will be a 458 Ackley (I have the reamer and it will shoot Lott and 458 Win), a 416 Rigby (again I have the reamer) and a 375 H&H on the Enfields. One Rem 30 will become a 300 H&H and the other will either remain stock or become a 275 H&H just because.

I have an enfield scout in 9.3x62. They are great actions and make a really nice hard use rifle. The new rifle will be similar but it has had the dogears removed so it will have NECG express adjustable rear and banded front sights and standard mounted 1-4 leupold euro scope.

The 416 Rigby was made for the Enfield...they just didn't know it then. Option two, a 505 Gibbs!

Depends on what you want thye rifle FOR.
If it is to be primarily a fun gun, and for close range AK big game I would go with the 458 Win.
With full power premium bullet loads of 400 and 450gr it is powerful enough for any game in NA.

With affordable 300 to 405 gr bullets at 45/70 velocities it is fun and cheap too shoot.

If yoiu are looking for a serious big game AK gun with a little more range the 416 would be the best choice.

Only if I was going to do a lot [sorry no pun intended] of elephant hunting in Africa would I consider the 458 Lott. Fot that it is a good choice. I would load it with 450gr NF at 2200fps or 500gr at 2125 to 2150 for that purpose.

Consider other alternatives!-I built a neat .470 MBOGO on one and its a good action for the .600 OK. They are quite strong actions but make sure you use the P14 bolt for larger rimmed cartridges.-Rob

If you're going to butcher a 1917 Enfield, $400 will not get you much!!!!!

I fully disagree with the choice of the 416 Rigby....it's too large a base for the bolt!

Do it right...the 458 Lott is great in that big action and if it's done well it'll be a spectacular gun......but $400 won't begin to make it nice DG rifle!

I don't think 400 is that much a steal for somebody to just scew on a barrel, chamber it and modify the action. It was just going to save me the price on the barrel to go with 416 because he had one laying around he would make me a deal on. I'll probably have a grand or more into this rifle before I am done. Its the same guy who made my 9.3x62 scout so I am comfortable with his work.

You Guys!!!

the scoute looks very nice, and the gunsmith is a friend of his...we all know how deals work if you have friends. I still say Rigby, a certain panache and plenty of hammer power for them big ugly white and brown bears!

The_Bear78 I would help you care for and stroke the '17 smallbore,9.3Scout! Send it to the midstates (Misery) to my home. It will be kept warm and dry and well oiled. Guess it may get cold in the winter when out for woods walks. Let me know and I will PM you my FFL in Kansas City. I haven't found the '17 and the cash at the same time yet. Later, Packy

Glen AJ,

just bought an RCBS 350gr mould, .417" sizer die and the top punch and nearly a thousand gaschecks for the staggering sum of fifty (!!!) dollars from a guy in OK. Ask me in a couple of weeks how they work in the 416 Rigby CZ's I have.

Packy,

PM me when you get ready, I have a P17 Remington that has been properly milled and the stock nicely sporterized that I would send to a good home this summer. The bore is pretty good, and it could be bored and re-rifled to .366" pretty easily. Chambering it to 9,3x62 would be really easy.

It is a great action on which to base long or fatter cartridges. I'm thinking now 10.75X68 or 9.3X62. Decisions decisions! Thanks for the offer Rich. Good luck. Packrattusnongratus sofa

The best bang for you buck would the 458 Lott. Your smith should be able to make this caliber feed easily enough and .458 barrels are plentiful enough that you could find an affordable barrel without too much hassle. This way you could shoot 458 Win if you want or just down load the Lott. I'm not a normal proponent of the Lott, but since you have the action length, this seems like a no brainer to me.

Or at least, this is what I'll do with the first Enfield I get my hands on!

I like the looks of your scout. Is that the teflon finish? Where did you get it done? Does it look as good close up?

10-4 Yep! I just love those old beutiful protected sights. Just made for such a clutz as me. I dropped my old M600 once. Had to send in my 2 3/4 power widefield to have a new reticle installed. Made some repairs to the inside of the stock. I now want most of my guns made like the brick outhouse. Packy
