ok the 505 gibbs being custom built for me is going to be my number one gun i will take all big game buffalo elephant hippo and such with this rifle but in the event that something happens to the rifle and i need a back up what would you guys prefer. i have plenty of large bore single shots on number 1s but dont consider them worthy of the task im asking bolt or double what would you choose im leaning twords a searcy 500 since iv already owend one them them and liked it. i would prefer a 577 nitro but want to keep the rifle under 12k.

I recommend spending your money on a hunt instead of on more guns.

500 is probably right again....but it's not often I get to spend someone els's money....I say get that Searcy but I'd want mine in a 470 NE /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Something that doubles as a back up rifle to the big bore and a plains game rifle is usually the smart thing to take. Something like a .375 H&H Mag.

Steve, If you're talking a rifle to replace the .505 if the stock breaks or something like that, get a .416 Rigby or a .450 Rigby. If you're talking a "stopping" rifle, get a .500NE double. George

THe trouble with purchsing 2 stopping rifles is that the cost is so great that it can stop a guy from being able to afford the hunt. You have commissioned a fabulous .505 elephant gun. Now go hunt elephant.

And then there is the 5 kilo weight limit on ammo. That big fat stuff adds up in a hurry, so not many total rounds can go. Makes the 375 look like a contender for the role of back up. i have a 375 h&h i use it for deer........nothing against the 375 but i dont like small guns for the big boys. i think ill just use my 458 lott #1 as a absoulte last ditch rifle if something wrong happens to my 505

A back-up rifle for a back-up rifle? Isn't that getting a bit redundant? My question is what are you going to hunt with? FWIW, this year I took my .416 Rigby as a back up for my .500 A2. At first, I considered taking my .458 Lott as the back up rifle. But I decided to take the .416 since it is a good elephant caliber, but at the same time it is more suitable for plains game than the Lott. 458 i sold my 700 my 505 is my main gun so im trying to deside on a secondary weapon. so #1 505 #2 ????????????? leang twoads the 458+ i have very little to no desire to hunt plains game so smaller calibers ie 375 dont interest me. my main target is elephant secondary target is buffalo the only plains game anilas i want are 1 zebra and 1 kudu.

700nitro Perhaps you should ask Mr. Breeding to make you a matched pair of left handed GMA action rifles with turkish walnut, express sights, etc., one in .505 GIbbs and one in .458 Lott. THe Lott could have QD scope mounts for use on plains game and deer, while the .505 could remain iron sights only. THat should pretty much use up all the money that you made by selling the .700.

Just kidding. A good 505 with lower velocity cast bullets would make a pretty good rifle for most plains game as well for a man who likes to stalk in close. My choice would be the 416 Rigby since both are large, clasic rounds with overlapping virtues. Second would be the Lott (but don't tell anybody as it might ruin my reputation) Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship Phil Shoemaker Alaska Master guide FAA Master pilot NRA Benefactor www.grizzlyskinsofalaska.com

You answered your own question, take the existing .458 Ruger No. 1. As it is only a back-up rifle being a single shot is no real handicap. If it needs to be used, you have a PH backing you up as well, and a .458 Lott is no slouch anyway. This leaves some $$$$ for the actual HUNTING!

What about a CZ in .505 Gibbs? Cheep, and you can use the whole weight limit on the same brand of ammo. Two rifles, and still money for the hunt! Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

This is the best idea yet! Have a gunsmith really smooth out and glass bed that CZ and have CZ themselves put decent sights on it. Then you are good to go and not wasting weight allocation on a different and likely useless (assuming the Breeding rifle doesn't go tits up) calibre. JMHO, John

A Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 loaded with Garrett ammo is the obvious choice.

Shit, I forgot about that. In this case he should use his Gefroh 4 bore (assuming he still owns it). Best, John
