Put just 15 rounds through the new .416 Taylor today, dialing in the old steel Weaver K2.5. The rifle is a Czech Vz-24 with 25-inch stainless PacNor barrel. With WW .458 cases, Fed. 215 and Hornady 400-grain JSPs, I got 2312 fps with an SD of 13 using 70 grains of Re. 15. Stepping on up to 73 grains gave me 2,380 fps, with absolutely no pressure signs, so I will try working up toward 75 grains. I am sure I will be able to beat 2400 fps.
I was very surprised by how manageable the recoil was. Not much heavier than a .375, at least to my shoulder, but then the Bell and Carlson stock design is a very good one for minimizing felt recoil.

Sounds cool, what range will you sight it in at? I notice a lot of loading data for the Taylor shows that R15 works very well and I guess it does, 2380 fps would be a dandy load for, well, anything! [Smile]

It's great to get a new rifle! I almost bought a 416 taylor once last year, a guy had one for sale in the paper for $500 but i had just bought a 454 casull and the wife was frowning on another purchase. Those 400 gr hornadys ought to get the job done!

The .416 Taylor sounds like a great all round kind of gun and can be put into a light package. Keep us updated. Mike it would probably make the best sambar deer round possible I reckon.

My 416 Taylor is about 8 weeks out. This is the first time I've ever been so fired up about a rifle that I bought brass/dies/bullets before the rifle is in hand.

This rifle starts out with a Montana Rifle mod. 1999 stainless action and a 23" stainless Montana Rifle lapped barrel #5 contour. Add NECG banded ramp on the front and a NECG three-leaf express sight behind. Topped with a leupold 1-5 VXIII in talley QR rings. Now all that's needed is a stock. Any recomendations for a stock/stock configuration that will minimize perceived recoil?

Be interested in any loads or any good sources of loads.

Gents,
My Taylor is the 375 version,My 416 is a Remington Mag...If the 416 Rem Mag wasn't such an easy conversion ,I definatly would have a 375 and a 416 Taylor. I really like the 375-338 wildcat due to the plentiful brass available. If I was to do it twice the Taylor would probably get the nod.
As it is I am having a hard time deciding on my next Big Bore...a real easy one like the 35 Whelen or a Real gun like a 505 Gibbs Or the 510 Wells. I have the 458 already so I think a 35 would fill the niche between the 30's and the 375 would make sense,,,But the brute force of a 50 Cal really appeals to me too. Decisions decisions... anyway enjoy the spotlight and power of your 416 because I doubt any of us are ever satisfied as long as there is something out there we don't already have. 45nut
