I truly love perusing the gun auctions for both the bargains and silly. Found no bargins, but the silly and overpriced are abundant: First for your viewing pleasure we have this diddy from Auction arms: web page A rare Ruger Express in 416 Rigby, at a reserve price of only $2000.00. Not a bad buy, when you can buy brand new ones @ around $1100. Or from GunBroker, a truly rare item, FN Orbendalf (sic), in 8mm starting @ $1200. Now last time I looked FN's were made in Belgium, and Oberndorf's were made in Germany, this appears to be a hybrid. web page And finally, the best for last: mauser type A long action civililan (sic) sporter starting @ only $3999.00. You have to see the picture and wonder "what in the hell" the seller was thinking. here it is: web page I guess the sellers are trolling for suckers, but, they must get better bait. Bob

Quote: That's a rare rifle, Bob, and it's a helluva good price if you ask me! I'll cut you a deal and sell you one for only 1900.

You never know; someone might fall for the ad copy. I'm sure that the purveyors of 'herbal Viagra', breast and penis enlargement pills, et cetera, must sell some of their products to hopeful/unsophisticated consumers... George

I emailed the fellow regarding the "long action Mauser Sporter", to tell him if he actually sold the rifle as an original Mauser Sporter, he could get sued. I also attached several photos of real Mauser Sporters to show the difference. I finally finished up by telling him my impression of the rifle was a poorly done "sporterization" on a k98. He thanked me.

Nitroman, Interesting, nice work, but I notice he has not changed it yet. I also e-mailed him with the same line of thought, but he has not answered yet. I also e-mailed the gentleman with the FN Orbendalf (sic), gently explaining the geographic differences between Germany and Beligum. No reply as yet, but his rifle looks like an FN Deluxe, but you never know. Bob

Look, the guy with the Type A Mauser can't even spell cashiers check, I wouldn't expect much from him at that point. Sean

I guess there is nothing wrong with a guy wishing... When I sell, I try to ask a fair and reasonable price because I want the purchaser to be happy with the deal. I am not in the gun business and only sell out of my personal collection from time to time, and perhaps guys who try to make a living at it have a different attitude. It doesn't do anyone any good for either a buyer or a seller to take unfair advantage. Once I wanted to sell a Detonics SS .45 at a time when they were in business and selling for $550 new. Mine was in 97% condition. The gun shop offered me $75 for it. I told the proprieter that I would not only decline his offer, but it meant that I could not trust him and could not do business there any more. He said that since I had not stated a minimum price, there was no harm in asking. He must have tried that sort of trick a lot because eventually the store closed.

I know a guy who made over a million dollars a year in sales from his gun shop, doing that exact same thing. He used to be one of the biggest retailers of used and new guns in Canada. He's also just celebrated his 50th year in business (he's tried retiring several times, but keeps the business going in a much reduced form, just to have something to do). Many times, he's say to someone wanting to sell a gun to him "Give me your best price under $200. Most times they'd come back with "$150" and he'd buy it. But if they said "$199.99", he'd still buy it.

If you want to laugh, look at what the seller named 'KidBillions' asks for firearms on GunBroker. It looks like full MSRP and then some... George

There were those used worn out trade in Barrett M82's that were supposedly used in Desert Storm by the Marines. Had really bad spraycan camo jobs on them, and just looked like they had seen better days about 15 years ago. Guy was selling them for around 20k if I'm not mistaken! 20k for a worn out 7000 dollar gun is pretty ridiculous. Then again, at the local estate auctions, I see mismatched beat to hell no parkerizing left Garands going for 8 and 900 dollars, when CMP sells them for 500.

Guys, There are all types of scam artists out there right now, both sellers and buyers. One of the latest tricks is to buy a fairly expensive item and pay for it with a forged cashiers check! The check is usually made for a few thousand more than the agreed on price. The buyer then calls the seller and asks him to wire him the difference. The unsuspecting seller deposits the fake cashiers check because it's "good as cash". Sends the product, wires the funds, then gets totally hosed when the check comes back as a fraud and his bank charges his account for the fake check. (Legal on part of the Bank) Now you're totally fu%$ed. In my line of business, I'm seeing more and more of these scams. Always call the institution you get a check from to make sure it's real!!!!!!!! And of course, in the case of these gun brokers and auctions, always do your homework. Caveat Emptor.
