I am asking this question here because I figure you guys would probably have the best answer on how to tame the recoil of hard hitters. I am only shooting a .300 Win Mag. but I have a very bad shoulder. I am looking at several brakes from Brownells. I thought some of you might have experiance with any of them. The first one is the R3E2C MUZZLE BRAKE The second is one from DLASK ARMS http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/ProductDetail.as...=RIFLE+MUZZLE+BRAKES The third is the VAIS brake. Any thoughts or suggestions? Don Nelson Sw. PA.

I'm not big on muzzle breaks on hunting rifles, but I do have one on my custom 6mm Ackley Imp. It is a Holland Quick Discharge. I like it very well as I varmint shoot many times from the prone position and it stirs up the dust quite a way from the shooter. At the range you might be hated though. I looked at those also. I am also looking at one from JP Enterprises. It is ugly but I know it works very well as guys at the range use them. http://www.jprifles.com/ Don Nelson Sw. PA.

Don I have used the KDF brake on several rifles. Very effective, it makes a light weight 300 WBY kick less than a 308. I have shot a Vias braked 300 Win Mag. Both reduce recoil quite a bit, but they are loud. I have a Magna-Ported bbl in 300 Win Mag and one in 375 H&H for my Blaser R 93 which is a fairly light rifle. I prefer the Magna-Port as it does not seem any louder than a regular bbl. But if you have a bad shoulder injury get the KDF. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I just put together a rifle in 416 Rem with a removeable Vais brake. It works well and isn't as loud as some, although I'm pretty deaf already. My wife has stood to the side of my Savage 338 win mag with the factory brake, my 3006 and 308 with Magnaport, and the 416 Vais and said the MagNaPort was the quietest with the Vais in second place. The MagNaPort doesn't cut recoil as effectively, it just decreases muzzle flip. You can tell the difference with the Vais brake on verses shooting the gun with it off. The point of impact changes about 2" with the brake on, something to consider. I wrote Vais about this and they said it didn't happen on all rifles but was fairly common.
