I recently read an article about 450 calibers, one of the cartridges mentioned was 458 Sabi? I would like to know more about this caliber. Which case is on built on, is there ammo and cases avilable? Any member who as used it for hunting?

Cheers

SABI is a South African custom rifle maker. Their web page doesn't refer to the 458 SABI though they do describe the 270 SABI and the 338 SABI. Those are low velocity cartridges for the bore size. Don't know about the 458. Mabye Nickudu can chime in; I think he has one or more of their rifles.

IIRC and I may well be wrong, it are based off of the 500 Jeffery case.

There once was a link to Sabi at www.bigbores.com (Nickudu's website).

The .458 SABI is a straight .458 case, essentially a .458 Winchester or .458 Lott stretched to 3 inches in length. The purpose was to duplicate .458 Lott ballistics (2350 fps) using the powders that are redily available in South Africa and on a standard magnum bolt face to easily and inexpensively allow for a five-round capacity in a DGR. Cases are available but hard to find. The guns are generally built around the .458 CZ550 action. In my opinion, the cartridge has marginal utility for the North American or European hunter, as we have relatively easy access to powders that the South Africans do not have.

Ken Stewart developed this cartridge for many years ago. He can make cases for it if you want!

I'm curious what case ut's based on and it's performance etc.

Long or medium sized action?

I guess Ken can make all kinds of stuff

Johan,
The October 2003 Magnum magazine from RSA has a long article on the .458 Sabi, pp 52-58, by Gregor Woods.

The .458 Sabi is based on " ... a .500 Jeffery case necked down to .458 and shortened to 68mm, launching a 500gr softnose at 2300fps, a 500gr solid at 2400fps, and a 550gr soft or solid at 2250fps. Shoulder angle is 40 degrees which makes this cartridge appear smaller than its actual dimensions - it is unusually handsome for a big-bore."

In the words of Gregor Wood.

The 550 grain Woodleigh soft and solid has a sectional density of .375.

The .450 Majoor is a shortened .416 Rigby case necked to .458, which would be similar to a 45 Lapua.

the .458 3" (Venter, Stewart and Badenhoorst) is called the
".458 Express (3")." That is the straight H&H case lengthened to 3", of course.

Thanks for the help.

I have to look thru Nickudu files for the article.

This means that a 458 SABI shall be able to fit in a standard mauser action and get a performance simular too 450 Rigby, 450 Dakota Tempting

husky,
Ja, Gregor Woods said so.
I still like the 45 Lapua better than any of the other 458's. It is also about 68mm long in the case and has the Same Rigby rim size as the 500 Jeffery case, but better with no rebate. It will do anything the 458 Sabi will do as advertised by Gregor Woods. It will fit a Mauser 98 better than a 458 Sabi also. There is no better brass than Lapua also.

The 45 Lapua is like a lengthened 450 Majoor.
