I have been looking at these lately. Anyone have any experience with this one. Any opinions? This is a black powder number. I will probably load it nitro for black though.

I have heard that the brass is slightly smaller in diameter at the base than the 577 NE. I have also heard that bore diameters are not "standard" in that they are .506, .507, .508. Anyone know if these rumors are true?

Todd,

I looked into a .577-.500 No. 2 a few years ago. Many of the rifles in this caliber were cheaper than an equivalent .500 3" BPE. Brass, dies, etc are more expensive than the straight version, and It may be slightly more difficult to work up nitro-for-black loads with the bottle neck. Never the less, the Rigby I saw was really cool. I understand that Bertram now sells formed brass.

Case length is listed as 2.812", rim thickness as 0.060" and bullet dia as 0.510". My understanding is that this brass is the same size at the rim at the .577.

Be care with the bore diameter. It could be smaller or larger than .510". The only way to know for sure is to slug it. My .577 BPE is actually 0.580" and not 0.585".

Didn't we talk a while back about your conversion of a Browning 78 to .577?

Greg,

Thanks for the information. What make is your 577 BPE? What kind of loads/velocities have you heard of them getting with the 500/577 No2? Are they better than the 500 BPE?

Unfortunately that was not me that was thinking of converting a Browning 78 to 577.

Todd,

My .577 is a Cogswell & Harrison underlever hammer with 3" chambers. It's cased with tools. I'd post a pic if you were interested and I knew how.

Graeme Wright's book on loading the double rifle gave the following data from an old catalog.

ICI, 1926

.577/.500 No. 2
130gr black powder, 340gr or 380gr bullet at 1850 or 1775fps, respectively. Nitro for black: 440gr bullet at 1675fps.

.500 3"
136gr black powder, 340gr or 380gr bullet at 1925 or 1850fps, respectively. Nitro for black: 440gr bullet at 1900fps.

The .500 3" gives a bit better performance. Either on would be great. Thad Scott has a nice looking .500 BPE that just came up on this web site. Westley Richards has a few .577/.500s listed. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Greg

PS Thanks for the response to my previous post.

A couple of months ago, Westley Richards had one or two 577/500's for sale for about $3000. Try www.westelyrichards.com
