I fianlly got to the range today. The 470 handled the proof loads fine. I had a bunch of 400gn cast bullets loaded for plinking so I shot them after the proof loads. They chronoed at 2100fps. I lubed the bullets with FWFL and didn't have any leading at all. I was almost able to hit a clay pigeon at 100yds off hand. The gun is still a bit light at just under 8 lbs.
I have a bit of a headache. I'll have to work on adjusting the weight. It still has a solid butt plate, where is a good place to find the red rubber recoil pads you guys talk about?
I loaded with 98gns IMR 4350 because that's what was listed in my Hodgdons manual and topped off with 5 gns of Dacron. What is a good load useing RL15? I also tried some rounds with a case full of IMR 5010, it gave 1650fps.
There is a pic of my home turned bullet on the 470 bullets thread. Now I'll just have to work on regulating and finalize the sights.

The gun slipped while remote fireing the proof load, so the trigger gaurd got a little mangled. I'll have to heat and straighten it.
I'm thinking about the NECG express sights from Brownells. I'll pickup an extra front insert to see if I can set a WartHog Ivory Bead in it.
Now where do you get those red rubber recoil pads?

Did you make 470 NE inserts for a 10 ga or 12 ga?? Thats what it looks like from the pictures. If so how long are they? I've thought of doing that myself, but never got around to it. I have a friend with a 470NE that has .357 Mag barrel inserts and it actually works pretty well at 25 yrds.-Rob

The gun is an antique Blegian "A.D. Bouquin Liege" 12ga that is Nitro Proofed. The insert is 24" long. I have the shotgun barrels cut off to 24" now also. I thought I would try one before I turned the other one down. The second one is in the lathe now waiting it's turn. I'll see how close it comes to regulating with both inserts in. I'm hopeing that I'll be able to turn the bbls down and shim to regulate it, then solder in place. I'll build a new extractor to fit also.
I had origianlly thought of doing it on my 10ga, but the gun is really kind of big and already weighs in at 10lbs. I'll have to see about doing the 12gaFH on it.
What I've read in this book on building double rifles on shotguns is that the pressure limit was mostly for the barrels as the actions were much stronger and useing the Greener cross bolt helped much in preventing it from comeing off face.
I took a chamber cast tonight and will drop it off at www.mountainmolds.com tommorrow to see about a 500gn mold.
I stopped by the steel place this afternoon and picked up a stick of 1/2" Brass round bar. I'll see if I can mass produce some 500gn flat points. They should cost about $.36 ea. I have a couple of boxs of Barnes XLC's to try and some 500gn cast from 475/480.
Now where do you guys get those nice red rubber recoil pads at?

Didn't someone post here that the Decelerators can be ordered in red from Pachmayr? That is what I have in the back of my head for my .404 J project.
Congrats on your latest success!
