Hmmmmm,

A new cartridge based on a 2.5" Rigby/Lapua case. Sounds like a scaled up version of the WSM line. If they go for staggered feeding from the magazine, these actions will be W*I*D*E.

Those of us on near beer budgets will have to get a CZ action and then put a spacer block in the magazine. "W.T.F., over?"

Alternatively we could go to straight line feeding and have a rifle that looks like one of those old Mossberg bolt action shotguns.

Will this end up being essentially a 416 Rem Mag in a shorter, fatter form?

Won't the original 404 Jeffreys feed a lot more easily? Winchester 70 Classics in 300 RUM are common enough. Just add $1,000.00 and you can have a serviceable 404.

I may be missing something, but it seems you will always need a decent dollop of powder to push a 400 grain bullet at a useful velocity. Why not have it encased in a piece of brass that is shaped for easy feeding?

Think how a 2.5" long Rigby case with 35 degree shoulders will look topped off with a 400 grain round nosed bullet. In the old days even the cable channels would wait until after 11:00 pm to show something like that.

Maybe Hamilton Bowen can convert a revolver cylinder to hold three of these.

I'm sorry, I'm being too harsh. I'm sure this cartridge will shortly dominate the over 40 caliber class at the benchrest super shoot.

PS These will run at much higher pressures than the old cartridges, right? I keep forgetting if that is a good or bad thing.

Scaled up 300 WSM was my first thought when I heard about the 2.5" case for the .423 Dakota Lapua. They have the same shoulder angle (35 degrees). Could have knocked me over with a feather when I got that shocking news! Jumping on the Jamison Band Wagon are they?

No need for either solution. Just avoid the problem. Use the CZ action and simply neck the Lapua case (2.7" brass, 20 degree shoulder) up to .423, load the bullets long with the extra cannelures or grooves available on North Fork, GSC or TSX bullets, then head for The Hill with Hilltop Arms' and Dead-On Ammo's .427 Lapua Kifaru.

The nicely tapered unadulterated Rigby/Lapua case body combined with the 20 degree Lapua shoulder, and 3.8" COL with the longnose loading, makes the .427 Lapua Kifaru feed like greased owl crap in the CZ box.

Yes the .404 Jeffery in an M70 action with RUM box is slick and easy too, but they won't be making any more of those for now, so snap 'em up when you can find them.

I will be comparing loads in my .404 Jeffery with my .427 Lapua Kifaru, both using 24" stainless McGowen barrels of 10" twist, just for kicks.

Exactly right, hence the .427 Lapua Kifaru

I think they will be claiming only 50 fps faster velocity than the 2.5" .404 Dakota based on the shortened .404 Jeffery. They apparently have recognized a pressure concern with the .404 Dakota and will not have higher pressures with the .423 Dakota Lapua. The sales pitch here is ample power but gentler recoil than the .450 Dakota, with shortmag benchrest accuracy and reasonable pressure, for the discerning shooter who likes wood upgrades. animal

Once again lawndart has produced a masterpiece of insight. thumb

Now I will shamelessy promote the HA!/DOA line:

.450 Lakota Thunderstick
.307 Lapua Chui
.337 Lapua Simba
.377 Lapua Nyati
.427 Lapua Kifaru
.457 Lapua Tembo
.470 Mbogo
.510 Tatanka

Our ads on cable TV will run only after 11 PM on local markets, or print ads only in adult oriented publications.

Look at the .450 Lakota Thunderstick. 2.5" case. It does have redeeming social value though, and I am sure Dakota thinks their .423 Dakota Lapua does too. thumb

Your stuff makes a lot more sense.

The Dakota advertising campaign is going to feature some thoroughly torured prose.

"Fight Possums" from the Nickudu Files:

Competition can be fierce among proprietary lines of cartridges, and rifle manufacturers.

On the left above is USRAC with the WSM Line, getting ready to "play possum." On the right is the Dakota/Nesika Bay Conglomerate. In the middle is Rick Jamison considering another law suit. bewildered No that is just silly!

On the left is the .404 Dakota. On the right is the .423 Dakota Lapua. In the middle is Charlie Kokesh. thumb Dakota is betting one of their possums won't play dead.

Rip, is the .427 Kifaru actually a .423 diameter caliber?
