GeorgeS,

I'm thinking about an hour! But that should be plenty of time for whatever got the first round to assume ambient temperature and pose for pictures.

SafariKid: this is just awesome. It is a truly great thing for somebody with the resources to build one of these to do so. You are my hero. Have you considered a source for cheap "brass"? IIRC Olin makes 4 bore paper or plastic shells for "Kiln Guns" . Brick makers use a huge oven to heatfire the bricks. Brick residue (wet brick dust) rises and sticks to the walls and roof of the oven. Every so often they take a blank and screw it into the fitting on the door (a sort-of adapter that looks like a short barrel ring-pull rifle) and fire a couple or severl rounds to dislodge the buildup. Twenty-five years ago I had a friend at Speer with a four bore, and he bought these paper shells to load for his rifle. He used a round ball as it was a BP hammer rifle, but perhaps this could give you a couple shots per case at a cheap price. He was able to get Olin to give him the names of their bigger customers and write them to buy the empties. Think of the fun factor with buckshot, about a quarter-pound or so per trigger pull. Would make a nice deer rifle!

Rich

PS: Congratulations on having such a monster, and double thanks for sharing it with us here.

Not that simple. Most Kiln gun ammo is belted so that it will not fit into sporting guns. Belts would have to be swedged or machined off, to be useable

All of this ammo I have seen are loaded with lead slugs. Never seen any blanks.

Shot loads in a rifled barrel will scatter BIG TIME. Ain't worth diddly, beyond a few feet. As the shot load be spinning for engaging the rifling.

Round balls would be fun IF, you could get them to regulate to the sights. Loaded with BP would also be a hoot.

Thanks Rob...I kinda exagerated the recoil for fun and if you see one of the other videos of me shooting it,you will see that..I do like to roll with it and it actually a "kick"(FUN) to do so...When the need arises,I can fire 2 QUICK shots as I have done so at 15 yds and put both of them 3 inchs apart in guessing, about 3 seconds.I just hold on tighter!I feel that my light 600 kicks more, hurts more, but shoves a lil less!Just found out that I get 3 Buff next month, maybe 4 now,so I guess I need to bring 4 rounds instead of two! : )

Rich, thankyou and glad you like the video! I have used those shells in my 8 bore...I dont care to save a few bucks as its not something I shoot alot at a time. The brass will last for many loads Ken tells me,so no problem!I have another case of a hundred cases ordered ,just in case(get it)!As far as buckshot goes,I got a 10ga Auto for that,5 shots fast!No round balls for me,they are to light and just puch a hole, yes a big hole, but they dont expand like these jacketed rounds which make a even Bigger Hole! Dead Buff pics coming around Nov 1st or so~!

Hogkiller: thanks for completing the answer for me. This was back in 1979, and a comment in the conversation. I had just put a couple of those big slugs out of an eighteen pound double, and my mind may not have clear!

Kid,
understand your concern, just a thought. Somebody else here may build a "budget four bore", is that an oxymoron? or just be interested in owning a cartridge case. I know I would be.

Rich, Old Western Scrounger use to sell new made 4 bore brass cases. These were machined not drawn. Got one for myself years ago. Someone may be turnning some. They do make a neat addition to your collection.

Safarikid- Good man! You lean in well with good posture and yes you roll out of it nicely also. One suggestion which I'm sure you already know, is center the butt more into your chest than onto your shoulder. You look like your built just like me ( optimum size for absorbing recoil) and by first consciously placing the butt more chest centered, I find I have better control and can roll easier. It doesn't look like the barrels torque too much either. I definately like the short barrel all buisness look of that four bore!Neat gun! and well done. -Rob
