I have a 416 Taylor built on a MKX action. Basic factory stock. I had been using a Burris 3X9 on it but never felt it looked correct. Leaning more towards a lower power scope. Something 1-4 power. Any thoughts or suggestions. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

As Mark has already stated, you'll get a lot of recommendations for the Leupold Vari-X III 1.5x-5x. At a lower price, the Leupold Vari-X II 1x-4x might be a good choice (I believe Ray likes this little variable). My personal choice would be a Zeiss 1.5x-6x 42mm for a .416 that will be used for DG and plains game; Schmidt & Bender, Zeiss, and Swarovski have 1.25x-4x scopes that are very good optically. For a 'DG-only' .416, a Leupold 2.5x or 3x and the Burris 1.5x or 2.5x would be among my choices. George

For the budget conscious: Leupold 2.5x or VX1 in 1-4x20mm. Otherwise the VXIII in 1.5-5x would be real nice. If you dare be different, how about a straight 4x Leupold? Cheers... Con

If I had a .416 Taylor, I would limit its use to elk hunting and use a bigger gun for DG. Therefore the .416 Taylor would wear a Leupold 2.5-8.

My 416 Taylor wears a Leupold VXII 1-4x scope. I think its just about perfect, but I may put that scope on my 470 Mbogo instead and go with a Leupold fixed 3x (currently on my .375) or 2-7x (currently awaiting assignment in my gun cabinet). It looks great with either the 1-4x or fixed 3x scope on it. Although mine is not designed for DG hunting, it is a "little big bore" and the small objective lens suits the look. All the suggestions above are great. The 416 Taylor is a very useful and versatile cartridge, no matter what the naysayers and contrarians are saying about it on the other thread. Cheers, Canuck

Con is right, a 2.5x leupold, 1-4 leupold, 1.5-5 leupold (if you have some more $$ to waste). I like the 4x idea I would also be happy for to have a compact leupold 2-7 on there or normal 2-7 leupold for that matter or once again be subject to the law of diminishing returns and get a 1.75-6 leupold. If I owned a taylor I would set it up for 340 gr woodleigh protected points.

Thanks for the input. I had a 3X9 Burris on it and removed it to use on something else. Just always felt like it needed a something in the 1X4 range. While I have a couple VXIII scopes I really have trouble seeing that much difference from the VXII. Has anyone used the 1.75X5 Burris? PC thanks for the heads up on the 340 woodleigh. I use 250 woodleigh in my 358 norma and have good results. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Yes, I have one on one of my .22s. It's alright, optically, but you'd have to be mindful of the location of the turrets vis-a-vis the ring placement. George

What makes the ring placement more of an issue on the Burris? That ring in the front? As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I have a 1.75x6 leupold on my talyor works just fine. I have a 1.5x6 burris on a model 99 300 sav and used it to shoot a lot of deer. But that said I would go with the leupold.
