I have come into possession of what looks like a custom pre-64 Mdl 70 in 458 Win Mag. The wood is outstanding, with shadow line cheek piece. It has iron sights, an engraved bolt and bolt release and a beautiful gold enlayed Kudu on the bottom metal. The engraving is signed by either C. Wilby or C. Wilby. It has a 6 digit serial number. Can anyone tell me how to determine an approximate value on this rifle? "There are worse memorials to a life well-lived than a pair of elephant tusks." Robert Ruark

In my estimate it is virtually worthless, and to save you grief I will pay for shipping the rifle to me where I will dispose of the worthless piece of refuse. you'll have a better chance of getting a reply if you post photos. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I hope to have photos in a couple of days. Didn't know if anyone might recognize the name of the engraver. "There are worse memorials to a life well-lived than a pair of elephant tusks." Robert Ruark

Here are some snap shots. The rifle belonged to Tanzania PH Ridge Taylor. His widow has asked me to help sell it. "There are worse memorials to a life well-lived than a pair of elephant tusks." Robert Ruark

I doubt one could duplicate it for less than $4,500 today. Probably a lot more. IMO it'll bring the most at auction on one of the gun auction sites. Start the bid at $3,500 and see what happens. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." If you add a letter of provenance from Mrs. Taylor indicating it to be an African rifle with history you will definitely appeal to individuals willing to pay top dollar for the rifle. It is quite spectacular in my opinion. Good luck with the sale. Frank

I would concur with the figures vapodog has mentioned, but I can't help but think that perhaps there would be considerable interest from some who have hunted with Ridge. I would consider that groups interest assuming documention was available, of course some may know the rifle outright. Quaility stocking jobs alone are knocking on $3000 to start not to mention the blank or barreled action. But custom jobs sell for $.50 on the dollar everyday. HBH

Thanks for your thoughts you guys. I have also asked Lisa to prepare a letter of provenance on Ridge Taylor Safaris letterhead. That was a great idea. "There are worse memorials to a life well-lived than a pair of elephant tusks." Robert Ruark

You are doing a great service in helping her sell what must be a very personal loss for the family. I hope there is someone to help my family do the same should some misfortune come our way. Frank
