Old news to some, I'm sure. Nosler has .338 FailSafes (230 grain) on sale for 45% off. Same for the .375 (300 grain size). You order them off of the Nosler web site itself. I got my bullets in three days! I asked Zoe Ditmire (great name, eh?), who handles billing and shipping for Nosler/Shooters Pro Shop, if they were discontinuing the FailSafes. She said, "affirmatory" (or words to that effect). They still have a pretty good stock, and evidently too many of the above mentioned sizes. If you like those bullets there is literally no time like the present to stock up. LD

used the 300 375 for plains game eland on down. Great bullet! If you own a gun and you are not a member of the NRA and other pro 2nd amendment organizations then YOU are part of the problem.

About time as far as I'm concerned. The bullet is way too complicated to manuf. All Nosler has to do is add a bonded partition for a "super premium? bullet. They'll have to get around patent infringement w/ Swift, but anything is possible. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

Complicated for sure, but boy do they work. The 376 Steyr with the 270 grain FailSafe dances with the bigger boys. Good on engine block testing, FWIW. One last off topic questioon about your wonderful 404J conversion. When you shortened the stock, did you go ahead and refinish the whole stock, or just the nose? Won't you be glad when mine is built, and I stop bugging you with questions? (Butter Up Time) I am impressed with the elegance and low cost of your conversion. lawndart

Hi Army Aviator, I only use the 270 grain FailSafes in the Steyr. I have a detachable magazine fed Steyr SBS Pro Hunter ($400.00 on close out at C.D.N.N. Investments.Com). I suppose you could use 300 grain FailSafes in a rifle with a longer magazine box. The best powder for velocity and accuracy is BL-C2. Since I was working up a load for hunting in a variety of temperatures I went with Varget. Case: Hornady (virgin) Primer: Federal 215M (Winchester WLR or WLRM would be fine also). Charge: 62 grains Bullet: 270 grain FailSafe COAL: 3.100" (As long as I could fit in the magazine and still have good function.) Groups: 3 Shot - 1.016", 1.004", .998" 60 and 61 grains were 2 1/2" to 3". 62 was a pleasant result. Next time I load for this I might use a meplat uniformer. It will buy a little more boiler room while still having good feeding. Don't expect the trajectory to change enough to notice out to 250 yards. Next rifle will be a chopped and channeled Mauser. I have some 250 grain Swift A-Frames and some North Forks to play with. With 260 grain Nosler Partitions the Steyr liked 64 grains of Varget. 1" to 1 1/4" groups. I wanted to keep pressures to 55,000 psi or less. Velocity????? (Forgot the chrono that day) Weather: Sunny, Balmy, Low Humidity, Gentle Zephyrs (i.e. SW Idaho at the end of April) LD

Could you measure one of those 270g Fail Safes and tell me how long they are?

1.340" You can get a meplat trimmer and trim back to 1.320". That will buy you a little more room in a Steyr Prohunter. At the velocities we are talking about it will have no appreciable effect on maximum effective range. LD
