Uhhh...I don't mean to be a smart aleck here, but why not just call the airline you will be traveling on and ask? I'm sure they will be glad to answer all of your questions. That way, you will know for sure what the limits are, instead of relying on a bunch of internet gossip.

The IATA regulations actually say 5 kilograms of ammunition, which also works out to about 100 rounds of .375 H&H ammo.

Most airlines say you cannot divide the ammo among passengers.

I have never seen anyone weigh ammo, but I have been asked what weight I am carrying. I always say under 5 kilos of course.

Black Powder,

The rule is 5 kilograms; you get 2.204 pounds per kilogram, so the weight in English units is 11.02 pounds.

Perhaps Ron got confused on units. [Wink]

How much does one of those .700 NE cartridges weigh?

Sorry! Barbara is full of shit and shouldn't be telling Africa bound people this misinformation.
5kg is the limit. If they do weight your ammo and they due on occasion you'll have a hassle and you want as few problems on your safari as possible.
You are not supposed to split the ammo with a companion but how would the airline check-in people know that you and your traveling companion are both not shooters on your safari and that each of you is carrying his/her own ammo? So the reality is that you can carry 5kg yourself and your companion can carry another 5kg. Just remember to declare all the ammo when you check-in.

Here it is directly from SAA's website (note that they incorrectly say that 5 kg is 10 pounds). When they ask how much ammo, tell them 4 kg.

Ammunition
A maximum of 5 kg (10 lbs) securely boxed per passenger will be permitted for conveyance in the aircraft hold. Any ammunition in excess of the 5 kg limit must be conveyed as cargo under the dangerous goods regulations and prior arrangements must be made SAA Cargo.

NOTE: Ammunition with explosive or incendiary projectiles is totally prohibited for carriage by SAA.

Regards,

Terry

Each 700 NE weighs $30.00 plus 2 pounds of brain tissue that will be liquefied when the round is fired.

Just joking...

5 kilos is correct and that is exactly 11 lbs. Tanzania is 100 rounds, RSA is 200 rounds, Zim doesn't care...100 rounds is very close to 5 kilos or 11 lbs. of ammo with the 404, 416, 458 Win. and LOtt, the airlines and countries are pretty good about not checking to close, but I wouldn't abuse that regulation....
