Posted this at the reloading section and no response. I'll give it try here.

Gents,

Anyone have a load for the Lott which uses a 400 grain at 2150 without a filler and no hangfires?

Thanks,

Roger QSL

52-54 grains of AA5744 should get the velocity you seek.

No fillers necessary and, definitely, no hangfires as 5744 has a high nitro content.

51 grains gives 2150 fps in my .458 Winny with a 405 Remington.

5744 is a great powder for light Lott loads, cast or jacketed. For general plinking and messing around, Hog Killer and I have also used 75 grains of 4895 behind the Remington 405 SP for about 2300fps, not especially light but lighter than full power loads. Probably not a good hunting load as I suspect that bullet (designed for the 45-70) may not hold up well at that speed, it doesn't on green oak anyway. Relatively cheap too (100 bullets for less than $15 at Midway).

If you want really light loads, Accurate Powder Co. told me that you can go as low as 30.0gr of AA-5744 with cast bullets. This should be very mild as 40.0gr w/500gr cast gives about 1600fps. I have not loaded 30.0 gr yet but I guess that they would run around 1300fps, 45-70 type loads for plinking, bolt opertion drills, etc.

I shoot basically the same set up except with 400 grain barnes pointed soft points. They are a little tougher and the ballistic coefficient is much much better.
They penetrate through game under 60lbs (no bones struck) without much expansion and penetrate through, with devastating affect, game in the 80-120 lb range. I plan to try them on larger game in the near future.
recoil is much less than standard 500 grain loads and they are accurate.
In addition you can back off on them to get the speed around 2200fps which reduces recoil and the bullets hold together better.

addition-
With this bullet there is no cannelure.
However I crimp the bullet VERY LIGHTLY and CAREFULLY with a lee factory crimp die (.458 win mag)
