Burkhead, I have a .376 Steyr (or 9.5X60) in a 20" (50.8 cm) barrel carbine. The .376 case design was developed from the 9.3X64 cartridge case. I don't have any experience with the 9.5X66, but the vom Hofe cartridges I have seen are all good designs. I would choose the rifle first, and select whichever cartridge fits it better. The .376 Steyr needs premium bullets to perform at its best. jim dodd

Burkhard, although you are looking for a 9.5mm, I would sugggest sticking with your 9.3 x 62. There is some ammo in that caliber to be found in the more popular African hunting destinations, whereas with any 9.5mm except the .375 H&H, your rifle would be useless in the event that the airline lost your suitcase containing the ammunition. On game there would be no difference in performance, hence my suggestion that you stick to the proven 9.3 x 62.

Quote: Burkhard: What about the .375 Dakota, based on the beltless/rimless .404 Jeffery case, which pushes a 300-grain bullet at 2600 fps?

Herrn Burkhard, I think that you should consider the 9,5mm Miller & Val. Greiss (made from a necked down 10,75x73 case) Waidmannsheil Husky

All my hunting life, the 9,3 calibers were my favorite. I had them all (9,3x62, 9,3x64, 9,3x74R even the pre WWI 9,3x72R I once had in a very rare doubleriflebarrel drilling). At the moment I only have a custom made 9,3x62 with a 20" barrel, my rifle for wild boar hunting - drive hunting and nighttime hunting from the high seat. At the moment I am planning a "nice to have rifle" in 9,5 mm (.375). Its for the moment where I (you never know) have the chance to hunt buff in Africa. All the 9,5 calibers beeing on the market I checked and this 2 calibers are the two I must decide. Please don't recommend me the 375 H&H - I never would take belted cartridges. Burkhard

My first thought was to suggest the 9.3x70 in leiu of a .375 (particularly as you are not interested in the original and best .375 round....the H&H). The 9.3x70 is a very impressive round and more than capable of taking all African game.

Burkhard, your 9,3 is all you need. I have a super nice 376 steyr... I really love it, but there's no appricable gain for building a .375, and your .366 is legal in most countries. How about a double in 9,3x73/4 ? Or 375 flanged? a next reasonable step from your 9,3 is the 416,404 family. The 416 dakota (404 improved, nexked to 416) is a great choice there. The 376 is a fantastic round... and in a modern action, i don't think there's a sweeter round, BUT... if I ever have a chance to face blackdeath, it's going to be with a .400 or larger jeffe

Tank you for all the informations. Johan and BwanaBob the 9,3x70 is just the projekt my gunsmith and mw try to realize. At the moment we discuss about the open sights Westley Richards or Holland and Holland. It will cost some months more but next near I will have one of my dream rifles in my hands. You all are right, there is really no need for a 9,5 mm rifle. So I think my next projet will be a 500 Jeffery or a mountain rifle in a 6,5 mm caliber, maybe a single shot falling block rifle. Johan in point of the Blaser R93 I agree with you, but only in the R93, the other Blasers are great. For a straight pull rifle my vote is HEYM. Burkhard
