David Clay is almost done with my 3 1/2 year project gun. He shot it yesterday and it works and ejects fine. It has a small removable muzzle brake . He is working on a custom clip to hopefully hold 5 or 6 rounds. The gun is based on a Bar 338 win mag. Lots of smithing and modifications to get it working. That Lott cartridge is a long sucker with the 500 grain bullets. I hope to have it in a few more weeks. The clip may take a little longer to perfect. I am also pretty excited over the fact that Colin Stolzer will be starting on my 2 bore double cartridge gun in a few months. It will be done in about a year after starting it. That all I got on my plate for awhile. I wish custom stuff was cheaper so we could all buy more of it!!

BD, please post photos of your Browning when you get it.

Call me as crazy as you are, but I would love to try that thing! Cool

I would have to find out how fast I could get off two, or three, or a magazine full of well aimed shots! Cool Cool

Crazy gun ideas keep things interesting. Nice to find people that will actually build them for you. I know there was a semi auto in 505 gibbs a few years ago, but it was a really big gun and there is a guy that converts the M1 Garand into a 458 win mag, so we figures we would try for a 458 Lott in a regular sized hunting rifle. Not that I have anything against big guns and really really big guns!

Ken, although you can't use a semi-auto in Africa as I understand, this will be just about the ultimate "Hog Eliminator", for sure!

They have taken the 458 WM Garand off their web site. I think there were some durability issues that led to liability issues. Too bad; that one was on my bucket list.

I wonder if converting a BAR from 338 to Jeff's 458AR would be less daunting than the Lott? I have a 458 SOCOM upper but for a 45 cal its a big pussy.

The 458Win Mag seems a natural for the BAR.

Are semi autos allowed in most African countries for big (aka DG) game? (Edit, never mind I missed Biebs comment - what I though.)

I would think that the Win. Mag. conversion would have been easier, too.

I'm kind of surprised that the Browning could be opened up enough for the Lott to fit, feed and function.

Must be lots of complicated gunsmithing and extra cost involved - but if it were possible, I would go for the Lott conversion just as BD has done.

Several years back a local gun store owner told me of a BAR done up in 458 win mag, but he did not remember if it worked very well or not. I just thought if it was doable, why not try the Lott instead of the win mag. Might as well push the envelope as far as you can and still do it safely. I think it is going to work ok, but Dave wants to test it out with more shots.

Either Jim Carmichael or Jack Lott had one made and wrote an article many years back. Can't recall all the details but I do recall it was a PIA to build and get functioning.

gate, I knew there was one out there. There is a lot of smith work to do to get one working properly. I hope Dave tests this one out and it all works smooth. I just thought the lott would be cooler than the win mag.

No liability issues. Richard McCann passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 13, 2010 at the age of 52. I was going to have him build one of his .458 WM Garands, but was disappointed to find out he had left the range. He also made an adjustable gas system for the Garand to prevent op-rod damage. He did beautiful work. He will be missed.

Sorry to hear about Richard passing away. I had talked to him several times a few years ago on the 458 project. I really liked the way the 458 looked on their web site.

I haven't got 585 barrel yet. Just got action
ready for cases. It is a Khan 12ga 3.5"magnum action.
And even after action work for my case it still feeds
12ga mag goose and turkey loads as well as slugs
I'll run 585HE cases in it at 35-37k psi.
That gives same bolt thrust as 3.5" brass 12ga
cases we load with hotrod slug loads. And that psi
in a 28-30" barrel will get a 650gr slug to 2500 plus.
I wish I had the dough to stack up a hundred
barrels ahead for my projects.Ed

To up date you on the 458 lott BAR semi auto. The gun works great with 2 rounds down and one in the chamber, but we are trying to get 5 down and one in the chamber. The follower needs to be reshaped, hopefully complete in another 2 to 3 weeks. This is not the only gun Dave is working on.

In the early 80's the Guns and Ammo publication 'Big Bores' or 'Big Bore Rifles,' - a cherished possesion of mine so it is embarassing to not be able to recall the title - Jack Lott reports on a BAR converted to .458 Win. Mag. There's a picture of him shooting it too. He said something along the lines of, "once they got it to function, it still kicked." If Jack Lott is saying it "kicked," it sure must have!
Extending it to Lott length would, to me, seem to be pushing things a bit. Perhaps that's the point.
Looking forward to hearing your report Big Doggy.

This 458 Lott does have a removable brake on it. Dave said with the brake it kicks about like a 30-06.

The 460 Wby is a 12" barreled single shot that weighs about 4 1/2 lbs. It weighs a pound less than my 600 nitro 16" barreled single shot. I have shot and owned several 50-110 revolvers. The 2 1/2" barreled one was a real blast literally. They are all real boomers.
