The first step is $, lots and lots of $ There is no affordable way to go about the project, certainly not to produce any results that would please you.

While a small action can be made to work, I personally think a larger action makes alot of sense. The std actions require a single stack magazine, that is expensive and difficult to do right. Even a traditional stack magazine will have to be custom made for whatever action you use. If you want to use the 570 gr X bullet, which I think is a fine choice, then the COL will be greater then what a std action will take.

The first thing I would do is secure a supply of hornbear brass. Without brass, you're up the creek, and if you wait until the gun is done, you might find you'll need to wait another year before you can get ahold of brass.

The barrel will have to have a second recoil lug.

Dimensions are sadly up to debate. From the A2 manual, rim .575", case head .619", case length 2.756", COL 3.465"

It is a very large case, and while it's length can be fit into a std length action, I see no benefit in going that route. You don't want to build a light weight gun, so why not use a larger action? You might not want to be limited to the 500 Jeffrey spec length bullets, so why not a long enough action and hence magazine for longer bullets?

I think a 500 Jeffery loses lots of its appeal if it was on a Weatherby. In my opinion once a Wby is thrown into the ring then the choice automatically becomes the 500A2/Wells.

As one of the final ten in the 500 Jeffery drawing, I have come to realize that I need (want) one. Especially since I only missed it by 2 numbers (306). My challenge is that I am left handed.

I know Duane Wiebe says that the Mauser can be modified for the 500 Jeff and I assume that the same holds true for the Winchester, Ruger and Montana 1999 actions. Since I have to do this project in steps as my overtime permits, how expensive is the action work and what does everyone recommend for actions/barrels/stocks? Would I be better off to wait for the Montana pro hunter action to come out or is CZ going to offer a big left handed action. I realize the Montana action would be a wait, but I have 2 regular actions on order now and have faith that they will be producing the pro hunter action.

Additionally, I have had no luck finding a cartridge dimension drawing. I have found plenty of info on reloading, ballistics and brass/components but would like to see a drawing with dimensions. Can the case be made from anything else? I understand there are some variations in different brass suppliers as to the dimensions of the case. Has that been standardized and which brass is best?

This project is a ways off yet but winter is a great time to gather info and dream. Thanks in advance guys for all your help. Mart
