I shot up some factory rounds to get some brass and am ready to load up some 400 hornady interlocks with RL-22. I was thinking of starting with 100 gr to start working from. Does anyone have an accurate load with this combo? Also, what is the best powder for this caliber. after finding an accurate load with the 400 grainers, my primary bullet weight is going to be 350 gr for here in the us.

RL-22 is good, but not as good as H4831, in my rifles. John Buhmiller and Jack O'Connor knew the best load for the .416 Rigby and 400-grainers was H4831. It was best in the 1950's and it still is. Use it with 370-410 grain bullets at up to 105 grains powder charge. Use either the Long Cut or Short Cut H4831. Will get about 2400 to 2500 fps depending on bullet weight in the range above. H4350 up to 100 grains is tops with 350-grainers at about 2700 fps, That's what I use. Start 10% below and work up, blah, blah, blah.

My Rigby likes reloader 19 with 400 grain Barnes, x's and solids. .

When I was using the .416 Rigby H4831 was best. Norma MRP was good as well. Just go with Jack O'Connors load of 105 gr. of H4831 and enjoy the thump, on both ends!

Another H4831 vote. I load 104 gr. Pancho LTC, USA, RET "Participating in a gun buy-back program because you think that criminals have too many guns is like having yourself castrated because you think your neighbors have too many kids." Clint Eastwood Give me Liberty or give me Corona.

I use Rl-22 with Barnes TSX and Solids (101 gr and 98 gr respectively) both shoot very well, H-4831 with the Hornady 400 grainers (101 gr). Karl Evans

I want to thank you guys for your responses. I know your supposed to look at the manual, but it's nice to start from a load that has been proven more accurate in people's guns. It gets you to the accurate load faster. I am going nuts waiting for my dies to come in so I can try some handloads.

Consider also that 7828ssc is virtually interchangeable with RL22 in this round with 400gr bullets.I'm loading 102gr for 400grBBS, and 100 for 400TSX and Hornady DGX. All velocities between 2380 and 2410. The only advantage of the 7828SSC was that I could obtain it last year, so bought eight pounds and have a good use for it.

96 grains of IMR 4831 and 400 grain bllets in my Ruger 416 Rigby bolt action produced velocities of 2400 fps and was quite effective. I did not like the recoil of loads producing higher velocities

I just bought some H4831 as I figure I'll go through lots of powder anyways. So is there a difference in volume between the regular and the short cut? I bought the regular figuring that it will fill up more of the rigby case. Also, I'm going to be buying some 350 gr speer bullets so any loads with that weight bullet would be great too. Thanks

I use 102 grains of IMR 4831 shooting 350 gr barnes tsx and solids and its dead on in my CZ 416 rigby. The danger of civilization, of course, is that you will piss away your life on nonsense

Well, I got my dies and loaded up some rounds. Here's my loads with the 400 gr Hornady RN: 100 gr Rl22 102 gr RL22 101 gr H4831 104 gr H4831 I'll post my results for group sizes and maybe velocity if I get the chrono out. It might a be a few weeks though because I sent my rifle in to the factory because there was some rust in the action. Hope to have it back soon. I'll still probably try your 96 gr, "Dr L.S. Wirthlin," if my velocity is really high with my current loads and chrono to see if my rifle is giving about 2400 fps. I could do loads from 2400-2500 roughly, but I'm looking for the accuracy. The range will tell. Next bullets I buy will either be the 350 gr speer or 350 gr TSX

I also noticed with the factory rounds that I shot, the bullets would set back under recoil until the crimp of the case came in contact with the very top of the crimp groove. Because of this, I seated all my bullets so my crimp was almost touching the top of the crimp groove. I figure this will cause less variation from bullet movement.
