Does anyone know a source for the Winchester 510-grain soft point .458 Winchester Magnum ammunition? It seems like they make one run a year and are currently out in most places. I am looking for some soft-point practice ammunition and it is sigificantly cheaper than the next-available alternative factory loads, unless someone knows a cheaper alternative.

I hope to be shooting 450-grain solids but my back-up will be 500 grain solids. Anything in the 400-510 grain range for practice would work with softs preferred as the gun ranges like them better.

And yes, I should be rolling my own but due to space and time constraints and general laziness I am not.

Also, Grafs shows a few boxes of WW 510 grain .458WM soft points in stock as I write this. At least their website shows availability. Might be worth a quick call.

Thanks very much. I had seen the Interbonds but not the Graf's SPs.

Graf's showed less than five in stock and I just ordered four boxes, so we will see how many they ship.

At $50 per box I'd have to be a lot more than generally lazy not to reload it.

Your welcome! Save your brass. You might want to reload some day, and as you are probably aware, .458WM brass can be limited in availability. That is one reason I started to reload this caliber. Plus, I really like North Fork Cup Points and plan to use them next year in Zim for Cape Buffalo.

That's one reason I bought five boxes of Fed Premium on closeout from Midway last year -- for the brass. But I can't shoot solids at some of the local ranges and I hate to waste it all on practice.

I am hoping to use NF FPS in this rifle depending on how it likes them next go around.

Nice to meet someone with a sense of humor! Actually reloading lets me be lazy. If I'm just sitting around Wifezilla always tries to find something for me to do. If I'm in the gun room "messing with the gun stuff" she leaves me alone.

RCG - thanks again for the tip. Four boxes of the softs are now in the house. Coincidentally they arived at the same time as my Lead Sled, $25 off at Midway right now (probably means they are selling them off to get the new version ready, with my luck).

have you considered a lead bullet for practice? Laser Cast in Baker, Oregon (100mi west of me) makes a line of Sure Shot gaschecked bullets. They weight 430gr and are 24-25Bhn. I have shot them up to 2200fps in a 45-120 Rugger single shot. They would group in the 1.5" range at 100yds with no leading. Two patches of Kroil and clean shiny bore. I would expect that would meet your needs for a ripsnorter practice load at about 40-50-cents per shot.

The problem (as noted above) is that I am incurably lazy and do not reload. If I did I would probably opt for the Remington jacketed soft points as they are pretty cheap. For factory loads the Winchester 510 SP is about as cheap as I have seen.

Thanks for the ideas - I did buy a press last year but have not gotten motivated enough to set it up and load!

I've always enjoyed reloading, it's simple, easy and saves me TONS of money... I can shoot alot more than I ever would if I had to buy factory ammo that's for sure.

All my rifle ammo is loaded on my trusty old RCBS single stage "Jr" that I've had since 1979. I hand trickle my powder charges, etc and can customize my seating depths, blah blah...
