Trying out some loads with the 260 and 300 Accubond, and thought W760 might be a good powder. Anyone else use it in the H&H?

TanD,

Consider going to Steve's Reloading Data Pages ( http://stevespages.com/375_1_300.html ).

Steve lists range of charges in a sundry of reloading manuals..

for 300 gr bullets he shows for W-760 From 61.5 grains to 79.0 grains...at MAX charge and 24" barrel velocity should be no higher than ~2675 fps (Quickload prediction).

for 260 to 270 gr bullets he shows for W-760 From 68.5 grains to 82.0 grains...at Max charge and 24" barrel velocity should be no higher thatn ~2880 fps (Quickload prediction).

START LOW and work-up, always checking for PSI signs. I highly recommend using chronograph in developing loads. ~5000 ft# of muzzle energy is at the maximum of what the 375 H&H can produce safely with a 24" barrel - go beyond this and it is likely you're working at PSI's over 65,000.

Regards, AIU

Used it in .375 Wby and RHINO 350-grainers. Please note: with a ball powder you may not have a full enough cartridge to avoid bullets in magazine moving/being seated deeper due to recoil. This lead to brass deformation and pressure changes in my ZKK 602 and I discontinued use in favor of stick powders that would produce full-charge/slightly compressed loads. Crimping at the cannelure only did so much to keep the bullets where original OAL was set.

I use H-414, ostensibly the identical powder but with Swift A Frames and Barnes TSXs 300 grains. 76gr behind a F215 primer. 2550-75 fps and UNDER half" MOA. I've killed a bunch of African game with it.

Ian

R-15 worked great for me with the 260 ACB giving 1 MOA accuracy and plus 2800 fps velocities.

I used 77gr OF W760 with a 300gr Hornady round nose on my leopard. It chronoed around 2725 if I remember right. My 375H&H has a 25" Benchmark barrel and shoots sub MOA with most loads I tried.

My Browning Safari likes W760 over extruded powders. I use 75 gr. with Barnes 270 gr. bullets as my most accurate load. Have gone up to 80 gr. as my max but decided it was not needed.

The 75 gr. W760 w/270 Barnes combo proved to be very effective when culling water buff in Australia in 2009.

Many thanks for the responses guys. I have some H4350 and Varget at the moment, but might pick up some RL15. Been hearing it is the "go to" powder for the H&H.

My rifle is a M700 stainless with a 20" barrel.

My CZ despised W760, Varget, H4350, and Noslers. Currently shooting 73.5 grains of R15 with a 270 TSX, at around 2600 fps. Scary accurate. Because I just can't leave well enough alone, I've purchased some Vit N540, and N160, and some 250 grain TTSX's. I am hearing in the CZ 550 class of rifles that 76.5 grains of R15 with the 250 grainer TTSX's are the way to go...Got a month to work up a load for elk season.

My 375 Sako likes H414 very well....I have had great velocity without pressure signs with the 300g Sierras and 270g Hornady SP's.....

I suspect W760 would be very similar for you,

Cheers,

Dan

Got my best velocities and accuracy with 760 before I rechambered to the 375 Weatherby. And even then it was the goods, as well as H4350 in both.
I was getting 2610fps with 300gr Woodleigh PP's and 2770fps with Nosler 260gr Accubonds.
If you want my recipes, please PM me.

Cheers.

RL-15 is pretty much the go-to powder for both bullet weights.

I have tried (on the advice of this forum years ago) WW-760/H-414 with 300 grain bullets. I used just enough to prevent set back. IMR-4350 or H-4350 also work well behind 300-grainers. Less drama as well.

In my opinion, W-760 is to the 375 what 4895 is to the 30-06.

I use 77.0 grains of W-760 behind Nosler 300 gr partitions and 285 grain Speer bullets. Both give sub 1/2" groups if I do my part with my Sako AV.

Hornady and Sierra shoot just as well, but I like Noslers..

I have been told that H-414 is the same powder, from the same manufacturer, the only thing different is the packaging.. That being said, I still only use 760
