Did some shooting with Doug Turnbull and his 475 Cartridge a few days ago.

I fired several rounds through 2 different lever guns.

400gr bullets at 2150fps.

One was a Lightweight 1886, with a 20" barrel, the other a Heavier 1886 with an octogon bbl.
This latter is his personal rifle.

I was suprised at the recoil. Even in the light rifle it was not painful, to the shoulder, face or to my hand. I was not banged by the lever in any way.

The heavy rifle was the same length as my 450 No2 double that has 28" barrels. It was very well balanced and handled perfectly. It was very smooth working the lever while shooting rapid fire at a charging target.

We also shot at extended ranges and the rifle was very accurate.

The fit and finish of both rifles was excellent to say the least.

I am not a real lever action freek, but after shooting the "Heavy" gun I may have to go to rehab.

Very cool! Too bad you didn't get a chance to try the 470 Turnbull in a Marline 1895 to compare them side by side. From what I gather, the 470 is a bit shorter and doesn't require the long 1886 action.

He had a Marlin 470 Turnbull there.

The only diference is the case length.

Sorry but I did not shoot the Marlin, should have I guess, but I have shot a lot of Marlins..
They are excellent guns.

But...
I really like the 1886 action, and the 1895 in 405 WCF that I have as well...

The "Heavy" 1886 in 475T was perfectly balanced excellent off hand shooting rifle.

Did his guns have muzzle brakes, porting or mercury tubes?

No ports or breaks.
Did not feel like it had a mercury tube.

Just old fashioned steek and wood.

I think the real question here is whether he wore his trademark hat. sofa

Doug sent one too me for my big bore match last september for us too play with. What a beautiful rifle and a fine cartridge. It shot very well to say the least. And the rifle itself, well, lets say perfect. If i had the funds i'd have one in a second! And i wouldn't worry about hunting anything that bleeds. beer

The 475 Turnbulls rifles are light, powerful, portable and very quick to operate, plus the recoil is a lot like a 450/400 and is certainly more comfortable than a 375 H&H.

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

Doing well Tony. Let me know when you pass through on the way to "bear country". Hopefully it won't be so damned hot as last time. Don't plan on p-dogs though, plague wiped them out.

Sorry to hear about the plague.

Next time I head that way I will give you a call.

I actually found the recoil to be less than my 450/400, and way less than a 375 H&H.

I do not know how much the "heavy" rifle weighed, but it was balanced perfect.

The rifle felt like it was built perfectly for me.

Just picked up a RIFLE magazine today (which I had pretty much stopped buying, but there was an article by Phil Shoemaker in it, so I picked it up)

Anyway, Dave Scovills article had him shooting a cow elephant and the text was not specific, but it seemed that he put a solid from a Turnbull all the way through an elephant-lenghtwise?

If that is the case, it's impressive!

I was with Tony and also fired several shots with both of Doug's 475's. I expected the recoil to be harsh....boy was I wrong. You can shoot 8 shots very quickly, and on target with both guns. If I recal correctly the loads were 2150FPS and I would say the recoil was close to my M70 270 Winchester. I found the rifle a lot of fun to shoot. According to Doug you can load them hotter however he felt there was little benefit.

Doug mentioned that Scoville had taken and elephant Cow with this rifle and the bullet was a complete pass through.

The LW rifle weighs about 7.5 # and the standard rifle with octagon barrel 26" full mag weighs 9.5 #. The LW holds 4 + 1 and the std. 8 + 1.

Doug

I tend to use more than enough gun.
