I wish I knew what happened to the collection of Hatari Times Magazines that I had. I have lived on 5 continents and moved 17 different times in the past 22 years. Does anyone have the article that showed the military style stocked 458 Winchester that Harald Wolf built for himself?

If there is any way you could post a scan of that, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to see how the stock is built. If anyone knows of a complete set of Hatari Times Magazines for sell I'd like to have them.

I would like to see it too. Had a Scout in Tanz with a military stocked '98 .458 Win Mag. I never fired it. The forend was bound to the barrell with coppper wire. Luckily was never tested against game. DRSS

Are you referring to the one with the short barrel and upper handgaurd? I thought it was a 404Jeffery. I co-responded with him several times and met him when he was in Las Vegas for the SCI there several years ago. He actually wanted to come to Arizona and hunt till I explained all the hoops you have to jump thru. He was going to stay with me but it never took place. He actually wanted to hunt Javelina. He was a nice guy and a very talented gunsmith. I tried to get him to build me a rifle like that but he was adament he would only build the one. I can't remember where he hunted with it. His magazine was a good one but each issue was devoted to a single place and he had to have hunted there but he was surely knowledgable about big game rifles. I am mildly dislexic and I can't spell. So that's how we got to 458 instead of 404.

I also seem to remember that Harold built a short 458 with a top hand guard. He also wanted to hunt with me in Alaska but had the idea it was like Africa where he could come over for a month and hunt everything. We used to correspond quite a bit and talk at the shows but I haven't heard from him in a few years. That is a B+C Carbalite stock iirc. I got a sweet deal on an internally tricked out M77 mk2 SS in 338 a long time ago in Sitka. I got such a deal on it because I made the guy keep that stock and throw in the canoe paddle stock. The rifle sat on the rack at the gs for quite a while because everyone that picked it up and tried to shoulder it got all befuggled by the extremely high heel and comb. . The seller just loved that stock and was tickled to get to keep it. That Ruger was a much better shooter than I was but I did print lots of groups in the 1/2"-5/8" range at 200 meters with 300 gr Barnes Original and 275 gr KBC bullets. The gs that worked it over had set the barrel back a couple turns. Lapped the lugs, squared the reciever face recut the chamber with a min spec reamer . Recrowned it and put a slim line KDF mb on. He also lengthened the leade enough so I could load the 300 gr to max mag length. . It had less than a box of shells through it when I got it for $425. One of the best gun deals I ever did. That stock needs to go on a 6.5 Sherman, 25/06 or 6mm/06. The rest of the rifle looks good tho. A Boyd's Classic would fix it right up. Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

Yes! Thank you very much. I will have to find a source of Hatari back issues. Ebay keeps sending me the movie. Love the move, but I want to replace my back issues.

This last rifle has very similar stock with Mauser Pre WWII African Special model. Most of them do not have any wood over barrel but some has.

He also built himself a pig rifle like that, it was a 9.3x62 but I don't think he ever got around to writing and article on it..These rifles also had sling swivel that were military in that the slang came out the side of the butt stock, that made carry across the back more comfortable..Some had bayonet fixture, I recall him saying it was for sticking the pigs on his pig gun..Pretty neat persuasion for a 98 or any bolt action IMO..especially with a cocking piece bolt peep. I probably have at least a number of years of HATARI TIMES in boxes in my shop that I might be inclined to part with. I'm a big fan of the foreend being attached to the barrel. Seems like all military rifles do. My first 416 Taylor peeled the screwed on under barrel recoil lug and busted the stock out in the action mortice. So I restocked it with an MPI fiberglass stock after fileing in a dovetail and fileing out a steel lug. Then I took a barrel band from a 6.5 Arisaka rifle, formed it and kinda swaged it on. It worked great. I thot it looked kinda cool too . The Pre 64 model 70's, and CZ 550 have a foreend hanger and they shoot fine. That 416 still shot around 2"@100 yards. Anyway. I like barrel bands. Screwed on recoil lugs are problematic, solder works best and along with a dovetail its really solid. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

I think it was 2007 or 2008 at a Las Vegas gun show that a vendor had a rifle that looked a lot like the one pictured. The guy had all kinds of WWII mausers as well as some that were sported. His had an express style rear sight if I remember right. I think it was chambered in .416 Taylor? It was quite the interesting rifle never the less.
