Well since the gun bearers and camp boys are going to be packing food and water, camp gear, and what not, some of you, starting about day 2 are going to be leaving some nice rifles scattered all over the African continent it appears...I will follow in my beloved Bakkie and pick them up and sell them in Joberg, thanks guys.

Hi,
If I where hunting in Tagyanika before 1918(German East Africa) nowadays Tanzania..

I would go for:

For Antelopes etc:
8x73, Miller & Greiss (necked down .404 case)

For general DG:
10.5x73 Miller & Greiss Magnum

For the tricky situations:
.575 Miller & Greiss Magnum (Based on the .50BMG case, rebated rim) -but maybe no rifle was made in this calibre...

All built on Mauser actions...

If I have to carry everything on my back there's no question - 375 H&H. Being from the USA I'd probably take a Griffin & Howe. Now if money were not an object I'd pop over to london, on the way, and pick up a Holland & Holland double in 470 NE and two Rigby bolt actions; a 375 H&H and a 275 Rigby. This assumes that my gunbearers(4 of them) would do the carrying. One for each rifle plus one for the case of Highlands single malt. The most dependable would carry the single malt.

Fuhrmann, the assumption was 'you had a chance' to be an old time hunter. So we are at least assuming time travel and obviously some level of means to get a foot in the door in Africa were we born back then in the first place. Our beleif in the ability to improve our means further were we given this chance I think is what put us all together on this site.

My choices are simplistic and non specific as to makers and setups.

A pair of 577 nitros.

375 H&H

303 Brit

22LR

12 bore paradox.

Yank 45 ACP service pistol.I just like'em.

And for the other scenario

Some kind of drilling in 12,12, 9.3 if they were available at the time.

The pistol.

And maybe olesarges wheeled mechanical contrivance

If You had a chance to be an old time hunter , and we'll inlcude ivory specialist too- say the last of the glory days the 20's/30's to have all the classic calibres,

What do you outfit yourself with for the job? Assume you have reached the means to indulge your professional preferences.

You can have as many as you want, specify what you carry for what and who ever carries what for you etc., just as if you were there.
