I just wanted to know about how much recoil my Ruger no. 1 450NE is generating with:

550gr bullets
97gr of H4831
7lb 10oz gun

I dont think that this is the limit of my tolerable recoil so I wanted to know how it would relate to a 600OK or 550Mag. Now that I have one big bore, I kinda feel like I want another.

Just running some rough numbers through Quickload and Sierra it's a big jump.

A 550 Magnum with a weight of 10 pounds firing an 800gr bullet will have roughly twice the recoil energy and recoil about 25% faster.

Proportionaly this is about the same as going to your 450 NE from a 9 pound 375 H&H.

Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!

Alright I got access to a chrony today.

Max load was

98.5gr of 4831 at 2213
550gr bullet

the recoil calculator says it is 106lbs of recoil. The stock recoil pad is obsolete with this load Smiler

Hey, I'm Canadian too!

It depends somewhat on which calculator you access... there are MANY on the NET!

Regardless, most will give a ballpark figure, not an exact one.

Here's 3 different responses I got based on your numbers:

First:
recoil energy = 117.4 ft-lbs
recoil velocity = 31.5 fps

Second:
recoil energy =107.88 ft-lbs
recoil velocity = 30.19 fps

Third:
recoil energy = 106.21 ft-lbs
(no recoil velocity calculation)

The most important number above is that of "recoil velocity". That's how fast your rifle is moving in reverse! That will give you the rifles recoil momentum, which in your case is about 230 lb ft/s! Compare that to your bullet's momentum which is 174 lb ft/s! (At muzzle)

The reason for the rifle's momentum being greater than the bullet's is due to not only the "equal and opposite reaction", but because of the "rocket effect". Cool

I cannot give you numbers but I can share first hand experience. I purchased a No 1 in 450 3-1/4 last week and had a range session Saturday.

Range session with 480 grain Hornady DGX factory loaded rounds.
50 Yard range
Open Sights
20 Rounds fired
76 Deg F
Calm winds

First I can tell you that my No 1 weighed in 8lbs 4 ounces on my digital scale, straight out of the box.

I installed a slip on KickEz pad and a neoprene cartridge holder with 9 rounds on the butt to add a bit of weight and help with felt recoil. With the KickEz installed and the cartridge holder full up, the gun came in at a little over 9.5 lbs.

With the KickEz pad and the added weight the recoil was noticeable but not extreme to me. Recoil was manageable but you must roll with the gun.

Easily able to keep rounds on target at 50 yds with the open sights.

Using the Ruger pad that came with the gun is not something I would recommend. Tried it ONCE and the felt difference in recoil was VERY noticeable.

Overall a very manageable gun with only a few simple modifications. Total cost of the KickEz pad and cartridge holder was less than 20 USD.

I hope this helps.

CBNHNTR I have the same rifle and the first thing I did was buy the Limbsaver pad that is already prefit for the No.1. It fits perfectly however I had to redrill the screw holes as the two pads have different spacing. BEST money I ever spent!

Canadian, remember a BIG part of felt recoil is rifle weight and maybe more importantly, stock design/fit. Its hard to compare your No1 (GREAT rifle) with some big bore bolt gun.

P.S. Just wondering if you both had the empty case hang up on the safety when you ejected. I had to trim the forward edge of the safety to allow fool proof clearance for a quick reload.

Yep, mine gets hung up on the safety. If I rotate the gun slighly when I open the breach the case clears the safty and can eject.

Thanks for the heasds up on the Limbsaver. Are they still as soft and tacky as they used to be?
Had one a few years ago and it kept getting hung up on my shirt when bringing to my sholder. Used the nailpolish technique on my last one and that seemed to help.

Mine hangs up to, that is going to be the first thing I change. BTW what is the OAL on the factory ammo. It might be the large melpat but the longest I can seat the bullets out to is 3.825. Any longer and the bullet hits the rifling. I found that with 480gr bullets with 87gr of H4831 is not objectionable kind like a hard push. The worst load for recoil to date with the gun is with 650gr bullets loaded with 93gr of H4831 behind it.

458 Only's first figures are the correct ones. I have put a formula in a excel spreadsheet which is the correct calculation for the recoil velocity and recoil energy of a gun. The constant in this is the velocity of powder gas which of course cannot be measured outside of a laboratory but is commonly accepted as 4700fps. I should add that there are two other constants, 7000grs/lb and 32.16fps/sec as gravity acceleration.

My formula calculates your combination as giving 31.5fps recoil velocity with 117.5ftlbs of energy.

That's nice!!!!
