What penetration do you get with a 577 T-Rex and with woodleigh 750 grain soft nose bullets at 2700 f/s...? And with 2200 f/s? Do you get better penetration with a 900 grain woodleigh soft nose at 2300 f/s from a 577 T-rex than with 750 grains at 2700 f/s...? How much weight do you guys think is left in the 900 grain woodleigh after the expansion...? How big expanded diameter do you get with 750/900 grains woodleigh....? What do you think guys....? What of these are going to have the best penetration 460 wby, 577 T-rex, 600 nitro , 700 nitro...? I get 35 cm in wood with my 460 wby with 500 grain hornady soft nose. And i dont think that a 577 t-rex go as deep with 900 grain bullets.....! WHAT DO YOU THINK GUYS......???????

460wby, What penetration do you get with your 460 wby and with what bullet/weight/velocity...?

Compare the following A-Square penetration indexes. Higher = more penetration. 460 Wby = 153 577 NE = 81 577 Ty (2460 fps with 750 grains) = 117 600 NE = 84 And as I recall the 700 NE was something like 40.

Todd, Penetration Index is a bit more related to the real world than energy or even taylor knock out values. "The Penetration Index is calculated by dividing kinetic energy with the area of the bullet and multiplying the resulting quotient by the sectional density. The Penetration Index assumes solid bullets that do not deform and remain dead stable (absolutely nose forward) through out flight." A2 reloading manual, p. 257.

500grains, I agree with you in that this penetration index is a more realistic mentod of penetration comparison (based upon your description). I guess that there is no statements in the A-Square manual to qualify how much penetration each index point is worth (even if only shot into ballistic jelly). That was what I was hoping anyway. I mean realistically if a 700 NE solid with 40 Penetration Index points will penetrate 39 inches of Ele skull, do we need more penetration (realistically)? Todd E

As I understand it from 2nd hand stories from the field, a 700 H&H will penetrate a front or side brain shot on an elephant, BUT if the elephant has his head tilted up so that the bullet needs to go through trunk plus skull to hit the brain, then it is iffy.

Will the shockwave from the muzzle blast of a 700 knock over a moose if the bullet misses? What about the 600 or 577 or 700/577? Will the muzzle flash set a moose on fire if I am too close to the moose? ------------------

The muzzle blast from the muzzle brake on my 585 will knock a baseball cap off my head if I am not wearing ear muffs.

Need Just 1 More Gun, the muzzle flash will only ignite the moose if you are using black powder loads!! That is the great advantage of black over smokeless. Both type loads will COOK the moose, but only black will charcoal broil it!!
