This is my first post to the forum. I'm building a 505 Gibbs. I've ordered a Montana Professional Hunter Action, purchased dies, bullets and cases. I'm using the 600gr. fmj Woodleigh bullet. I have Jamison brass -- verified with them that their 505 brass has the same web thickness as their 408 chey-tec brass. I would like to load some rounds from 2150fps up to 2500fps (or slightly higher). I havent been able to find load data for the higher velocity/higher pressure loads with the exception of one load published in a Guns & Ammo article by Jack Lott regarding a Ryan Breeding rifle. Does anyone have a source for higher velocity load data they could guide me to? In the alternative, does anyone know if QuickLoad can be used for 505 Gibbs load development? Thanks. I've learned a lot reading some of the posts on this forum and any help would be greatly appreciated.

For load data, please see link at Ryan Breeding's site. http://www.rbbigbores.com/uploads/AH_Jan2007.pdf Here is 600 grain at 2,500 fps. Sincerely, E Pluribus Unum - where out of many, we will become one.

141 grs of rl 22 to 150 grs of rl 22 with the 535gr barnes tsx or flatnose. The 141 is a mild load the 150 will get your attention. The 141 loads has a little muzzel flash. the 151 is burning clearner and much sharper with less flash. DRSS 9.3X74 tika 512 9.3X74 SXS Merkel 140 in 470 Nitro

My standard load is 130 gr Imr 4831 behind the 525 and 535 Woodleighs Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship Phil Shoemaker Alaska Master guide FAA Master pilot NRA Benefactor www.grizzlyskinsofalaska.com

I use 525gr. Wooldleighs, Jamison brass, Federal 215 primers, and 136gr. of H4831SC which gives me just over 2200fps. out of my factory barreled CZ 550. Approach 2400 fps cautiously. I found that the recoil around there is dead serious.

Thank you all for the information. This forum has been a great resource. Hope to contribute to the forum as I get working with the 505 Gibbs. My other two "big bores" are a 375 RUM and a 416 Rigby. I chose the 505 Gibbs because of the versatility in loading it from mild traditional loads up to modern pressure loads. I'm going to use the Ryan Breeding load data as my max load for my load development. Thanks again!

143 gr. of IMR 4831 with a 525 Wodleigh is good for 2640 in my 23.5" Wilson barrel. Most folks don't want to shoot it more than once. Blake

A local magazine recently reviewed the CZ 505Gibbs and that load is about 100fps below theirs. The 600gr was shown with 131gr AR2213SC as clocking 2155fps. Norma factory clocked 1970fps with 600gr. These speeds bracket Woodleigh's recommended impact velocities. Cheers... Con

I have also seen batch to batch variation in H4831SC so you may have to adjust the load up or down about 1 grain depending on what you find. A chronograph is a must, they are only about $100 and worth their weight in gold.

I used 2213 and then 2213SC with 525gn and 600gn bullets - Woodleigh's. "I have also seen batch to batch variation in H4831SC so you may have to adjust the load up or down about 1 grain depending on what you find. A chronograph is a must, they are only about $100 and worth their weight in gold." "to adjust the load up or down about 1 grain" Are you trying to make a tac holer out of it ? That's less than 1%. Brass to Brass variation, seating variation, barrel, primer etc etc, 1 gn makes piss all difference in the big bores I shoot. "143 gr. of IMR 4831 with a 525 Wodleigh is good for 2640 in my 23.5" Wilson barrel. Most folks don't want to shoot it more than once. OUCH is all I can say. .

I use 130gn AR2209 behind the 600gn Woodleigh for 2270 fps with the PPSN, and 2290 fps with the FMJ. I have tried up to 138gn of AR2209 for 2370fps, but I don't think there is much point in driving the 600gn PPSN faster than 2270 as it will over expand and not penetrate as well. At 2270 MV it is down to 2200fps by 40m, and that is the maximum recommended impact velocity. The 600gn FMJ goes through 37cm of tree at 2290 fps, so I am sure it will give more than enough penetration on any game animal at that velocity. Recoil gets a lot harder to handle once you exceed 2300 fps with the 600gn bullet. I have also tried AR2213SC, I get 2230 fps with 138gn AR2213SC behind the 600gn PPSN, and have gone up to 144gn AR2113SC for 2380fps, and that kicks even worse. AR2213SC is a good powder for the 525gn bullet, and I use 142gn behind the Woodleigh 525gn RNSN for 2500fps. This load kicks the same as the 600gn bullet at 2270fps, and that is reasonable to manage. However the 525gn PPSN over expands at this velocity and I would not use it on buffalo but I do use this load for smaller game, and it is absolutely devastating on pigs. If you want to drop the velocities down with the 600gn PPSN or FMJ you can try AR2217. I found that 130gn of this powder behind the 600gn PPSN gives me 1950fps, 134gn gives me 2200fps, and 142gn gives me 2160fps. By the way AR2209 is the same as H4350, AR2213SC is the same as H4831SC and AR2217 is the same as H1000. Please make sure you work up to these loads from a 3 or 4 grains below as even though I get no indication of high pressure with any of these loads your rifle may not behave the same way. Mine is built on a Granite Mountain Arms action and has a 23 inch barrel by the way. Hope this helps.
