My father just bought a new mauser in 373 H&H, and he has a few questions. Keep in mind this rifle is for Canadian game ( bears, moose elk etc)

- What is the most common bullet weight in the H&H for this type of game?

- What ammunition manufacturer should I choose?

- Any other general info on this calibre would be appreciated,

thanks

I would look for something in the 260-270 range.

I've never bought factory 375 ammo so can't help on that one.

As usual just my $.02

The 300gr bullets would be great for use in the woods. I thing the stardard loadings from Rem or WW would be OK for everything but the big bears. For those, you might want a premium bullet. Kudude

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

You might try Federals 250 Trophy Bonded Bearclaw load. It is about a 3/4 power load and shoots good in the bbls I have shot it in.

If he handloads - in the past I have used 300 grain Hornady, solids and softs, with success. Also used 260 grain Nosler partitions. If I was loading for a hunt now, I would try Barnes Triple Shocks.

Maxx I'd like to give you an answer that may be out of the mainstream but worth looking at. I too have a .375 H&H and I found some Federal "Classic" 270 grain ammo on sale and picked up a few boxes just to shoot and get to know the gun. Well these shot so well I went back and bought another 120 rounds that they had on the shelf. My .375 with a 5x scope turned in groups between 1" and 1.5" every time I took it out. I know these aren't a "premium bullet" but they would be excellent on moose and elk and personnaly I wouldn't hesitate to shoot bears with them too.
I've read ( for what that is worth) that the 270 grain bullet is the premier weight for the .375.
I know I'll get beat up about this suggestion but do give them a try, somehow as a kid I was able to kill many heads of game without premium bullets, as a matter of fact so did my dad and his dad too.

I hand load my rounds but only use Hornady, Serria, & Speer bullets. They seem good to me.

I would suggest 250-270gr for the game you will be hunting. That is all I have used in mine.

Now, if I ever get to Africa. I would load up some 300gr for Buffalo.
