First of all I hope this is in the right forum.
What is the pressure differences between the following cartridges?
45-70
45-120
450 3.25"

You may want to mention which rifle. If I recall correctly from another forum you are probably talking about the Remington 45-70 Double rifle.

Hi Mike,
Actually a Pedersoli Kodiak. It's a little more beefy at about 10 pounds, with some heavy duty barrels. Pedersoli don't condone it, but told me that the same gun is used for 8 x 57 and 9.3 x 74 which both are way higher than the 45-70. I own a 45-70 and a 8 x 57 Kodiak. I have some regulation questions out to Mac also, since he has had several variations of this gun.

Two of the 45-70 loads listed hit 50K CUP a couple of the 9.3x74R's hit 42.6K CUP, 45-120 max's out at 28.5K CUP but the 450 3 1/4" isn't listed.

Jeffe,

Not in the way of stirring the pot but a serious question on the 45/120. Regarding the 28k cup.

I am not aware of any commercial loading of 45/120 although there were perhaps some winchester single shot chambered (as an experiment?) Or never chambered or loaded by anyone, I dont know. Has something been done in modern times? Smokeless?

Was the 45/120 ever loaded? Was that black powder? Where does the 28k come from?

I have been toying with the idea of reaming out a 45/70 NEF to 45/120 just for sh*ts and giggles. Whenever you are done with the project I may be in the market for a 45/120 reamer.

Goto Greybeard for info on 45-120 NEF's...I rechambered a NEF BC 32" bbl 45-70 to 45-120, My "Almost Quigly". I shoot 45-70 thru 120 cases with 425, 450, 525 and 720 gr hard cast lead slugs mostly. Just keep the pressures down around 40KCUP.

45-120 reamers are available at Reamer Rentals.

I'm slowly working through the process to do a stub barrel NEF 50 something...500 NE 3", 50-110, 50-90 Sharps, 50 - 3 1/8" or 3 1/4" ?? Reamer Rentals has the NE, -110 and -140 reamers. The -140 brass is ~3 bucks each, but the rest are from one to two bucks less.

Conley Precision and Buffalo Arms(black powder) both have loaded 45-120 and there "were" a couple more of custom ammo reloaders doing 45-120 at one time, but I can't find them online now.

It's fun to lob those heavy's out there and crater sage rats...

I use the slower burning smokeless powders at 90% plus case capacity...just pick a case length that accomplishes that goal.

Fair enough. Guess I did not want to stray too far off topic. My question is on the projectiles Where do you find 720 grain hard cast projectiles and what kind of velocity are you getting? I have got a fun project in mind for a subsonic heavy projectile. How well do they stabalize in the NEF gun?

Are you resizing brass? Dies are going to be expensive and was hoping you can get away without using them. As long as the rounds are extracting nice and easy and you shoot them in the same gun they don't necessarily have to be resized.
