I have shot a couple deer with my 416 Rem. and I was wondering what loads some of you guys are using. I have been loading 350 gr. Speer with Viht. N540. The deer don't seem to complain but I was wanting to try something different.

I have only shot one white-tail with the 416, a 100 pound doe. Load was a 350 Barnes X, 81 grains Reloader 15, Fed. Large Mag Primer in a Rem. case.

Doe was hit through both lungs and she ran twenty yards and fell over dead.

Same load got the same results on a 1400 pound Eland!

I have used my Buffalo loads on deer and Antelope with great results and it doesn't do much but knock a big hole in them, lets lots of blood out, they run about 50 yards and die..You can eat right up to the hole as they don't bloodshot much...actually you couldn't use a better caliber for light stuff...Africans have known this for years, but Americans on the whole scream "My God, you must blow them to Kingdom come with that cannon!", some times ignorance isn't bliss!

I usually use FN solids in Africa on plainsgame and this year I used the Northfork cup point on some animals like Impala, warthog, and it worked as well as any soft I have ever use, left two holes in everything and the exit was pretty big at quarter size..the Bridger flat nose solids worked great on a couple of Zebra last year...In the 470 and 500s the solids work as well as softs IMO.

416 rem on blackbucks.. close enough?

400 gr hornady shot at 2400... ZERO noticable expansion... 416 hole in, 416 hole out, dead critter, 30-40 yards... ZERO meat loss, as it all went in the baggies

I used a 400 gr. Hornady soft point over 104grs. of H4831 on a whitetail and even at 50 yards it didn't expand. I considered the 350 gr. variety, but for deer the 400s seem ok and shoot good in my No.1. I'll be out there with the same load next weekend...

I was wanting to pick a powder that I could use in my 375 H&H as well. Would Reloader 15 be a good choice? Or is there a powder that works good in both?

I haven't used enough Reloader 15 in the 375 to form an opinion, but others have used it with great results.

A powder I have used in both cartridges is IMR4064. Not the fastest, but very accurate.

By the way, I think 300H&Hs load sounds like a load for a 416 Rigby rather than Remington. I don't think you could get that much 4831 in a Remington case!

Good luck!

Doh!
McCray you are right. Those loads were for the Rigby cartridge, sorry about that...
Either way, whatever load shoots the most accurate in your rifle would be the one to use since it's going to make a 416 hole either way on a whitetail.

I just shot about a 150lb doe with my 416 taylor with a 300 gr resized .429 serria at 2620fps at about 60 yards. Took out both lungs bullet kept going deer ran about 40 yards and dropped. about a 2inch exit hole. So some expansion.

The load was 78 grs of imr4064.

Another whitetail bites the dust with my 416 taylor. This one a 100 lb doe at 90 yards off hand. She was facing me took through the front and out the back. Tore things up inside really messy. Didn't ruin much meat but I would rather shoot them side to side through the ribs.

I shoot Hawk bullets out of my 40-90 and found the .035s to shoot better than the .025s at 2500fps. I shot a whitetail buck in the shoulder at 100yds. and I can tell you that the .o35s are deadly!

I also got my best group ever with these bullets .250 for three shots at 100.

My advice is to try some of the .035 jacket RNs.

My pistol also shoots the .035s better than the .025s at 2100fps. I have made five one shot kills on deer, so far.
