will these stand up to the big boys? I was thinking about my 458wm and my soon to be completed 470 capstick? It seems that there are 2 versions the shotgun version and the vx1 or 2 I cant remember. I was kind of leaning towards the shotgun version with the heavy duplex

I had one on a 35 Whelen for 14 years, and then shifted it to a 416 Taylor last year. It has survived countless Whelen rounds and about 250 rounds from the Taylor so far. I think it should hold up just fine.

I have on on my .375 H&H no dramas whatsoever, it was on a 45/70 marlin before that for 100 odd rounds. They also use them on .416's a bit as well and sometimes bigger stuff, it will be fine.

But for .458 lott and above I like the compact 2.5x leupold.

I have one on a Ruger #1 Tropical in .458WM.

No problems at all.

Mine rode a .450 Ackley for about 250 rounds, then to my .416 Rigby for 272 more, so far. No problems at all.

The 1x-4x Leupold is a recent introduction. How could you have had one on a rifle for 14 years? Or are you thinking of the Vari-X III 1.5x-5x?

You are a bit behind the time. I have a VariX-II, not one of the VX versions of today. Same scope different lens coatings. I bought it new in 1990. I also have a Guns and Ammo magazine that did a review of the Leupold VarX-II 1-4x in the late 70's.

That's possible . I was under the impression that the 1x-4x was recently introduced; I simply do not remember it being available before 1998 or so.
Could it have been discontinued, then reintroduced?

Seems to me that the 1X-4X Leupold of some variety has been around for a long time, don't know specifics.

I have a new one, rifle version on the CZ .404 Jeffery. It zeroed quickly at 100 yards with 400 grainers at 2200 fps, then it would ring the gong at 300 yards without fail, holding about 1.5 feet above POI. Spiffy little scope, but not a true 1X on lowest setting, more like 1.5X.

Nope, it has been around for as long as I can recall also. When they made the VarX-II to VX 1 & 2 transitition it was only offered as a VX-2, until the recent addition of a VX-1 shotgun version.

I have the Leupold VXII 1X4X20mm on my Encore in 416 Rigby. I just shot 50 rounds and not one problem.

I have 600 rds of full house 458 Lott through mine with no problems. I actually like it as well or better than my 1.5 X 5. The current VX II with the click adjustments make it even better than my old Vari X II.

When caliber is the 458 Lott and larger, the ONLY scope I would use is the 2.5X Leupold compact...I have personally trashed most scopes besides that one on the really big bores, and I know a bunch of folks that have too, such as David Miller, G. Sutton and others....

A 416 Rem or Rigby won't normally trash any scope the 458 Lott will...

Its easy to read posts and see who shoots their big bores and who stand them in the gun case...I will give the 1x4, 3X, 1.5x5 and their simular competition, encluding all the good European scopes a max of 250 rounds, maybe 300 before they come apart inside, and many will do that in 10 to 50 shots...

The 2.5X Leupold compact has a completely different internal set up with all the adjustment under the knobs...They seem to work well regardless of the caliber, at least so far..I put over 600 rounds through a 458 Lott and a 505 Gibbs on mine...

I have a new VX2 1X4 on my marlin 45/70. I like hell out of it. I just put it in a new mount set up from Brockmans, It uses QD tally rings, andhas a spring loaded pop up ghost ring.
I bought it with the thought of hunting Elk in the qregon rain. I will be buying another low power 20 mm scope for aWhelen project I have startred. I would get another VX2 if it came in gloss. Thinking of an FF2 Burris or mabye a Nikkon monarch...tj3006

1000 rounds out of my unbraked weatherby 460 just trashed my VIII 1.75x6. Leopold had me a new one in 3 days.

I have a gunsmith buddy who builds a bunch of 50 Alaskan levers that on Marlin actions, a lot of them weigh 7 pounds to 7.5 with iron sights. His test mule scope is a 1-4x Leupold and is old as hell and shot daily. These rifles are worse to shoot to me than my .416 Rigby with heavy loads.

I use to have one on my Brno ZG 47 in .404 Jeffery, some 300 rounds so far.

However Kevin "Doctari" Robertson has convinced me that the open express sights are the way to go! (Atleast concerning buffalo)

I can't say anything about a 1-4 Leupold, but a Vari X III 1.5 X 5 has been trashed twice by my 416 Taylor. Only took about 30 shots each time. There is no doubt in my mind that Leupold will fix it. When I get it back, it's going on a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem.
