It seems to me that the thousands and thousands of satisfied 458 users are happily out using their rifles for what they were intended and the only ones constantly trying to convince folks of how anemic it is are those few who have bought into the hype that more velocity is always better in a 458 - but less is better in everything else.
How is it that a 400gr bullet from a 450-400 or 404 @ a claimed 2050fps can be so great ( Ross Seyfied told Dave Scovill that his original 450-400 Kynoch loads rarely reached 1900fps and the much vaunted 500 gr 470 Nitro loads from Kynoch seldom went much over 2000fps.) yet a 500 gr 458 bullet with greater SD @ 2000 or 2100 bounces off?
For all the guys who love the pounding they receive from more velocity and honestly believe what they are preaching why not just get a 460 Wby and be done with it. As Finn Aagaard said, a .458 500gr bullet @ 2000fps makes a bloody big hole in whatever it hits.

I think we all know that these pressure measurements are based on relative standardization and will vary based on lots of things. Bullet resistance is a function of bullet metal composition, bearing surface area, number of grooves, twist rate, cut or button rifled grooves, smoothness of the barrel and probably ten other things like the throat freebore, etc. The numbers will allways be simply relative. With that said, when the load is predicted to be 76-99KPSI and is ataining unrealistic velocities it doesnt take a rocket scientist to realize this just isnt OK. I think everyone agrees about that including Will. I like the .458 win mag and for one agree that it will kill anything that walks this earth at 2050-2150fps. I've even made long throat versions and loaded bullets out to .25 longer than normal to attain higher velocities myself in a Ruger number one. However, no normal .458 win mag is going to hit 2250fps with the above stated bullet and powder with overpressure loads. -Rob

Actually, I agree with you, but I get a little uptight when people start quoting QL numbers to 5 digits. I feel it's reliably accurate to the first digit, and sometimes it gets the 2nd one close as well.

Several labs, including Hodgdon, report .458s making 2150 with 500 gn while staying within pressure specs. That's been considered reliable big game performance for 100 years now.
